Subject: Oil Slinger a good idea? IP: Logged
Message: Thinking of adding the oil slinger P/N #2899530 or Mopar P5249636 on my next timing chain swap (#3) because It just ain't gettin' enough oil in there.
Would also like some feedback from folks who have installed the tensioner.
Does it still work?
How many miles so far?
TIA

Message: You can use a slinger as long as it clears
The V6 and the 5.2 318 use the same chain but
for some reason when the V6 block was machained
the cam sits .050 closer to the crank and even a
new chain will fit lose
unbolt and toss the old cam thrust plate and
install the tensioner in its place it is a must
do on the V6 motors or the chain will rattle
in as little as 10 to 20,000 miles
just install the chain and gears and yes also
always replace the gears not just the chain than
pull the pin on the tensioner
this setup is good for 250,000 miles under
normal operation
I used a cloyes true over sized double roller
chain and gears with the tensioners and it works
great
actualy I had replace the chain and gears 30,000
miles ago with a stock chain in this motor ans
when I changed the cam the tesioner looked the
same as the day I put it in so I reused it with
the hotter cam and double roller
there is a channel that provides oil to the
tensioner and drips onto the chain be sure this
channel is clean
I have customer trucks out there running this
setup with over 250,000 miles and no probs

Message: Thanks, I decided I didn't need the slinger, It looked like it was getting plenty of oil this time.
The Melling set I took off was ugly! 3-4 inches of slack and the teeth on the cam gear were really pointy and grooved, you could see where the timing chain was rubbing both sides of the timing case!
I caught it just in time.(only had 50,000 miles on it)
Ya know what they say, "The sourness of low quality lasts far longer than the sweetness of a low price"...
I put the new tensioner on and the gear set I got from NAPA (# 103072), High alloy steel gears and pre-stretched chain, Was a really tight fit! Had to remove the plastic snubber from the right side to get the gear set seated and put it back on afterwards, the pin even kept falling out before I wanted to pull it. That's how tight it was.
Now for the first time in the 15 years I've owned this truck, It's QUIET!
