Subject: Should I rebuild engine? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1987 dodge dakota long box that I have been using for my business for 3 years. I just found out that I need to rebuild the engine as one of the cylinders is shot. The cost would be $3000.00 Canadian. I have 3 options., buy another truck for $3000.000 (that is all I can afford), rebuild the engine or keep driving it till it drops( by the way it is not driving terribly bad, it just shakes in drive at traffic lights. Bye the way I got my frame checked out and it is perfect. The body is perfect, not a piece of rust and I really love my truck. I feel that I should rebuild the engine because For $3000.00 I dont think I would buy a much better Truck. What would you do?

Message: Have a look around first , you should be able
to get a late 90's , or even early 2000's for that money . Although , watch out for ball-joints
on these .
Then , if you don't like what you see
you could go ahead with a rebuilt .

Message: Buy a engine from the bone yard, offer them 500.00 when you find a decent one, those grease monkeys will grab the money faster than you can blink your eye! Show another 250.00 and they will put it in faster than you can scratch your ass!

Message: It sounds like you really like the truck so why
not.
A reman can be had for around $1,200 to $1,500
with a gurantee
A good used low mile engine around $600
A good shop could bore it .030 over new pistons
crank grind around $2000 to $2500
With a truck with a body as good as this it would
be well worth it for $3000 you may never find one
as good as you have and with a reman motor another
solid 10 or more years of use is there
in my opinion well worth it
