Subject: 3.9 cooling issue IP: Logged
Message: recently, the temp gauge has gone up about 1/8" more than normal when i'm sitting in traffic. when moving, no issues. changed to new 195 failsafe thermostat, same thing. have a 13 lb. rad cap on it for about 5 years now. at it's highest, it's still a little below the 100 center line on the gauge. gauge is o.k., as i did the diagnostic test, per the service manual.tried a 7 lb. cap, and it runs like it did before this rising temp issue. coolant changed about 4 years ago, but mileage is low at 56,000 kms.truck is a 2000. will a 7 lb. cap be o.k., or am i masking another issue ? am i just being paranoid ? thank you for any replies.

Message: After 4yrs, no matter the mileage, it would be best if you changed that coolant. Also, I'd go back to the stock with the cap. The higher the pressure the system holds the higher the boiling point of the coolant.

Message: same info as first post.
2000, 3.9l,new failsafe thermostat, coolant flush/fill, new 13lb.cap, gauge checked, both clutch and electric fans work. only temp sensor not checked. gauge stays from normal reading to slightly below normal since flush/fill, except when sitting -- then goes up near center (100 C)mark.any opinions before i yank out the temp. sensor, and would going to a 7lb.cap cause any problems? thank you for any replies.

Message: You could have a boil-over going with a 7 lb cap. Stick with whatever the factory cap was rated for.
What temp t-stat did you install? Your readings don't sound out of the ordinary.
"electric fans work"
But does it come on when it's supposed to? It should be on with demand for A/C or @ 210F which is middle of the gage.

Message: the reason i tried a 7lb. cap is because it ran cooler(on the gauge).stock temp.thermostat put in, 195.on my truck, the gauge never went this high when sitting in traffic, until recantly, even though it hasn't hit the middle (212F)line.
i just let it run in the garage to double check the fans' operation.after 10 minutes, it only went up to the lower point of the "new normal" range, since the flush/fill was done.(in other words, it's running cooler on the gauge than before the flush/fill). it didn't go up near the center line . now, i'm puzzled.is this b.s. indicative of a bad/lazy temp sensor? thank you for your input, and time.

Now I got it. I would think that's normal. The new/fresh coolant is doing a better than the old stuff. I run mine without the clutch/engine driven fan. It's been that way for the last 5.5 years and even in the middle of summer, idling in traffic, a/c blasting and it will never get to the middle of the gage. Stays around 190-195.

Message: i agree that the gauge would read lower after the f/fill. the moving up to near the center line, when sitting, so far, has me stumped.as well, i don't know why it would read cooler with the 7lb. cap.i'll keep an eye on it.i guess that they all have their quirks. thank you for your time, daddio.

Message: daddio -- same issue as before. i asked about the temp sensor, and was told that it is good, or it would be erratic.as well, i was told that the 7 lb. cap would not be a problem. i'm still puzzled. any opinions from anyone else knowledgeable about coolant issues would be appreciated. thanks, daddio, for your input.
