Subject: 90 Dakota Transfer Case Problem? IP: Logged
Message: My 1990 Dodge Dakota 3.9L V6 4X4 5-Spd is very hard to shift into
the gears on the transfer case..... If I pull back to go into 4H it is
very hard and wants to spring back into 2H.... same with the other
gears... 4L will pop out of gear if I dont hold it back. What can this
problem be? Thanks in adavnce!

Message: Had the same problem on my 96 Dak.
At the bottom of the stick there is a bushing,
rubber if i recall that siezes up.SOB to get the rubber unstuck. Once I got it free,
I drilled a hole in the bottom, tapped it and put a grease fitting in it.Pumped it full and has been fine ever since.

Message: On my 96, it is mounted on the side of the tranny.
Look directly below the shifter. It is the pivot point at the bottom of the shifter. I think if you take the rubber boot off the stick, you will find it.The rubber seizes up and hence the springy feeling you have trying to keep the shifter in low.

Message: Ok, so when my boot is off I should see a rubber bushing at the
pivot point of the linkage? or the stick itself? Sorry I never have
been in there before trying to soak up all the info I can... and also
how would you put the grease fitting in where a bushing is?

Message: I'm trying to go by memory here.
But I think the bottom of the shifter has a round metal flange that slides onto a shaft.
Between the flange and shaft is a rubber bushing that rotates with the flange. This rubber deteriates and sticks to the shaft. I ended up drilling a hole through the flange and rubber tapping it and putting a grease nipple in. Now the rubber pivots on a coat of grease on the shaft.
Once you take the shifter offm you will see what I mean.

Message: Sounds great.. So just two more question.. The shifter its self needs
to be removed from the transfer case correct? And now the 4wd
goes right in with ease?

Message: On mine, the shifter goes down and attaches either to the tranny or transfer case on the outside. It doesn't go into the transfer case.
It attaches to linkages.
And yes, it is as slick as can be toshift now.
It's just a piss poor design with road salt etc eating at the rubber bushing.

Message: Awesome... Ill let you know how it turns out for me... and yea it
seems like it... I dont know why they couldnt just make it a
greasable joint to start off.... When I bought the truck it has been
sitting for a year in the weeds.... No rust on it whatsoever but that
explains the bushing.... it also works smoother when u move it
back and forth quick... i guess it just heats up the rubber enough
to make it easier.... U must be right about this bushing!
