Message: The last oil change I found that my oil filter looked scorched like. After 1000 miles the new oil filter is begining to look the same. So im wondering if its bad coatings on the filter or if I have a problem with the exhaust flow like the cats being clogged. Ive found a cpl intake bolts that were rotted apart upon disasembling the engine ( Im rebuilding the top end, timing set, water pump, oil pump, and I may re-ring maybe; maybe not ). I could really use a new truck, but I just bought the wife a new car and cant have 2 payments. The engine has been well maintained so I feel comfortable with the re-investment of the partial rebuild.

Message: 1600.00 is more than i wanted to put into the engine repairs on the truck. I also have to re-run an evap line and find out why my brakes feel yanky even tho there is little sign of wear on the rotors. They feel warped, and grabby which screws with the abs causing some fun stopping in stop-n-go traffic. With these repairs in mind it is at a point of bandaids to extend the life another 50,000 miles.

Message: Anyone care to take a stab at the brake issue? i replaced the rotors, pads, calipers, and flex lines not too long ago. All it takes is a gentle touch to the peddle and itl throw ya. Bad to say but it all started with a brake change 2 yrs ago they started overheating and have been since. it improved when i rebuilt the brake system, but is now back to doing it again. The engine work is simple, even replacing the cats wont be too bad but the brake system has been beyond me, and i think im gonna need some help diagnosing the true cause of the problem

Message: Did you "bed-in" the new pads when you installed them? This is a must when changing pads to make sure they seat properly.
check out this webpage: http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp_bedinstock.shtml
They may not be warped but they could have build up of pad material form the old pads.

Message: New rotors, pads, calipers, and flex lines. So unless I have a buildup from these pads after 5,000 miles, I gotta look deeper chiltons diagnosing and testing aint much help short of just replacing the hcu or the abs module or master cylinder. Im now lost. I need a the diagnostic module that chiltons shows.

Message: not sure what brake set up your truck has,,,2 or 4 abs but check the proportioning valves in the lines... some times instead of sending even pressure to both calipers it will send it all to one causing it to lock up or stop hard, may not be your problem but i would look into it.

Message: For the brakes, you may want to check you booster and master cylinder. As for the motor, you can get a salvaged one for about $500-800. Alot of places will even do an engine clean for you and run it to make sure it runs fine. Had mine swapped out last year and it runs like a champ.

Message: I cant buy a salvaged engine. It would feel like i was buying into smeone elses problem. I appreciate the advice but i dont know if i could find an engine at that price. It would be nice and park my original in the corner of my shop and rebuild it. I would like to say i can bring my engine back to life, and it be like old times.Cruisin with my ladder rack in the wind....good times!

Message: well finished the tear down and i can still see the etching in the cylinders they look great. the heads looked fine and could see no signs of fluids passing thru the head gaskets. looks like the true problem was the intake only. to me that explains the decrease in fuel mileage, steamy exhaust, and slow loss of oil.looks like the repairs to the engine will be around $250.00.Now the issue i have is the intake: chiltons says torque to 23 lbs the intake itself says 12 lbs. itl suck if this thing starts dollaring me to death

Message: I did my intake without a torque wrench, Just make sure you follow the bolt tighten sequence. Never had a problem. Tighten sequence two times.

Message: talked to a freind with same yr model truck and he checked his engine and found the same problem with the intake bolts being rotten. think it could be cheap fasteners? seems like they would have to loosen for the gasket failure to occur and cause the leakage of coolant around the bolt itself. im stuck trying to find an 1.25 inch hose 2.5 inches long that goes from the top of the water pump into the intake. cant find it at normal parts suppliers.

That's the bypass hose. Any auto parts house ought to have that.
