Subject: No torque converter lock up IP: Logged
Message: I have a 93 was a V6 swapped in a V8 so it has the stock 42rh
trans and converter and i have no torque converter lock up. All
my gears are fine, O/D works and when I hook up my scanner I
can see that the computer is turning on the lock up solenoid at
the correct times. Whats odd is that it only locks up in the
morning when I am going to work when its still cold out, But it
only stays locked for a mile or so unlocks and never locks back
in until the next day, there is no grinding or unusual noises
works like it is suppose to when it locks up.... I am wondering if
it sounds like the lock up solenoid is sticking when it heats up? i
would think if it was the converter it would grind or make some
sort of noise or vibration? any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Adam H

Message: check the conections first
take a ohm reading center wire to either end
they should both be the same reading on trans
front wire O/D
rear wire lockup
cant remember the ohms off hand think 5 ohm
you can also test with just a test lite
probe rear wire rear wheels off ground on stands
center wire batt volts with key on
front and rear wire turns ground on
test light ground and to wire around 45mph it
should lite up
you would have to drop pan to replace sol
Another test is the forced shift
wheels off ground
ground rear wire and see if it shifts at around
45 just ground the wire and it will shift
some trucks were equiped with a temp sensor
this could also be the problem
And no the forced shift test will not harm the
trans

Message: Thanks i will have to try the force shift. what would the likely hood
be that there is an open in the computer and the ecm thinks its
grounding the circuit but it cant complete because of the open?
and since my scanner shows the computer is turning on the lock
up solenoid wouldnt that mean that the computer does net require
the transmission temp sensor? The scanner shows the computer
turning on the solenoid even tho the converter does not lock....
sorry this problem is just throwing me for a loop
Thanks adam H

Message: It's very common in these trucks for the solenoid pack screws to vibrate loose and cause an internal leak around the solenoid, which will cause fail to lockup. It's also common for dirt to clog the tiny opening at the solenoid. Both require dropping the pan, so do that, tighten the three screws holding the solenoid pack to the right side of the valve body, and change fluid and filter.
This vintage truck has no transmission temp sensor. It relies on the coolant temp sensor instead.

Message: Bob lincoln thank you for your help, i bough a mopar performance
computer hoping to fix my lockup problem.... that was a no go (but
i wanted one anyways lol) so i pulled the transmission pan and
inspected the solenoid pack and sure enough it was loose.
removed it and inspected and cleaned it and retightened installed a
new filter and filled it up with oil and tested and it works like a
champ. thank you very much Bob and Larry for all of your help
