Could be a crack in the distributor cap or bad plug wires. When it does start try using a spray bottle filled with water and spray the cap and wires and see if it starts to miss.

Check the coil - where the wires and coil wire connect , clean it up , may need new spark plug
and coil wires.

I still have the same problem. Just had a motor put into my '98 and used a SuperChips the next day. It then started to act the same way and I thought I screwed up. But now I know longer have the programing installed and when they installed the engine I gave them EVERYTHING for a tune-up, so I knew that that was not the problem. This past winter the truck sat for 90 days and I would run it every few days to make sure it was ok. I have a red top Optima and the battery actually died and froze. So, long story short, I still have the problem. Some times when I start it it will start and then sputter and die. Then I noticed that when it does the stereo pretty much shuts off, so I'm pretty sure it's the battery. I'm thinking they may have sat it on the concrete floor when they swapped the motor, which is a big no-no. If it continues you may want to change your battery.

I am buying a 92 from a friend for $500. the only problem it has at about 180k is that for the past few months it will not completely turn over only after raining. worth the investment? is something flooding or what?

Change your plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Parts will cost you around $50

I had a simular issue with my 90 dakota. Seemed to always have problem when it was wet out. After taking it to many "experts" I ended up replacing the "HAL" thingy in the bottom of the distributor. I believe it cost under $50. Was a VERY frustrating problem.
