Subject: 92 V6 PCM PROBS IP: Logged
Message: I have a 92 dakota 4x4 with a 3.9 V6 and a MANUAL
transmission.
The original V6 finally crapped out and I replaced it with a
junkyard 1996 V6 a month ago. The 96 motor did not have any
EGR system on it.....so I swapped the intake and exhaust
manifolds from the 92 to the 96 engine....the engine ran fine for
the month until PCM(ECU) failure....this is where it gets
messy.....
The PCM has a base number of 56028749, my local dodge
dealership has this PCM listed, but not for my truck, in fact, they
seemed very confused, as I am now.
I opened up my PCM and noticed stampings as to when it was
manufactured....it said 1996.
So my PCM was replaced at some point before I purchased the
truck.....???
What PCM do I use??????????
56028741
56028750
or should I still stay with PCM I got with truck??
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Message: One = define 'failure' , what is happening ?
Two - have you checked that infamous splice
under the fuse/relay box ?
Three - If it really does need another ECM
try www.car-parts.com - get a used one for a V6
92 up to 95 , never mind the numbers..

Message: Last weekend as I driving back from the country, the motor just
cut out....i could not restart on the highway. it was towed home.
once in my driveway, i checked for spark at cyl 1 and the motor
started...and the motor started!!
the motor ran but poorly....and then after a few minutes it would
stall. the motor would start again and stall out. after restarting it
a few times, i would be bring the rpms to 1500 and hold it there
for a few minutes, and it ran ok.....as soon as the revs came
down it would stall again. the following day, it just didnt start
and hasnt all week.
i have tested the primary and secondary resistance of the ign
coil, and its in range. my cap rotor and wires are only 2 months
old. I have continuity from the asd relay to the coil and still no
spark...i have heard about the infamous splices....so i did rip up
all the wires under my relay box....i did see a few splices, i
checked for continuity between the splices, and i had continuity,
maybe i missed one????
after speaking with a mechanic, he recommended that i replace
the ecu......

Message: here is how to check that
pin #'s 3 and 9 one has power all the time for
comp memory and one goes on off with key next
time it acts up just use a long sewing needle
and back probe these 2 pin's
Any 3.9 92 to 95 will run any 3.9 92 to 95 manual
or auto trans
Here is something to think about find a full size
ram 3.9 these computers offer better o/d and
lockup operation of the trans have more timing
and fuel added to offset the weight of the heavier
trucks
A very noticeable diff using these comps on the
smaller dakotas

Message: I'll bet you still have a bad splice, and nothing is wrong with the ECM. Monitor the 12V power to the ECM as Larry suggested.
