Message: Same here. I cannot get rid of the code either. Ive changed the cap, rotor, ignitor, plugs, wires, coil and crank position sensor and I STILL get the mis fire code for cyl. #1 and 5. And all factory parts too. Its driving me nuts.

Message: "P1391 intermittent loss of CMP or CKP"
CMP - CaMshaft Position Sensor
CKP - CranKshaft Position Sensor
Could be either of those on the way out causing the misfire codes. Try unplugging them and cleaning the connections really well and do a reset and wait until they pop up again, if they ever do.

Message: To fix the notorious random multiple cylinder misfire code on mid 90s dodge trucks like the Dakota and the ram. After much research and headaches. It basically comes down to two things, secondary ignition crossfire which there is a TSB you can follow and it is, TSB18-48-98. It has to be followed exactly or it wont help. The second thing has to do with the engine not having enough dedicated grounds. The first aftermarket ground you should add is on the left fuel rail going to the windshield wiper motor mounting bolt, the right rail already has a ground strap to the firewall. 2nd is off the ignition coil bottom mounting bolt to the web(side) of the frame.Make sure and use 12 gauge wire. This should fix most of yalls random misfire if you've ruled everything else out. NO CAR BEFORE MOPAR.

Message: I was thinking it was an injector problem too so I switched them from side to side and still get the random misfire codes on only the left side cylinders (1,3,5). With 175000 rough miles on this engine, I think its time for a rebuild.

Message: Hey TimG,
I am having a very similar issue with cylinder (1,3,5) misfire that comes and goes. I have been throwing parts at this for about a year and everything seems to help for a week or two then the check engine light reappears. I found quite a bit of info on 3.9 v6 with engine oil sludge problems. One site suggested an engine oil cleaning to loosen sludge (some find controversial). I am attempting to use seafoam 1/3 in engine, intake, gas (see directions). I have only put about 100 miles on it with 6 or so starts but it was noticeably better after pouring the sea foam into the oil fill. Note the oil fill is on the same bank as our misfire so I am thinking it could be a sticky valve or lifter issue.
Hope this helps.
Mark

Message: I just put a rebuilt engine in the Dak, I didnt have the cam position sensor synced quite right and it threw a 1391 code but once I got that corrected, it went out. Judging from the amount of sludge and funk that was in that engine, I'm surprised it ran at all.

Message: I have changed wires, plugs, used sea foam in the tank, Mopar cleaner in the throttle body, still missing and will not idle. So, you just poured seam foam into where you put oil in the engine and it helped somewhat.

Message: I finaly found out what was causing this issue after many part and dealers looking at my truck. It turns out it is the Intake gasket set that needed replaced. Oil was leaking into the manafold after running and when you restarted it blew the oil into the valves and caused the misfires and ruff idle till the oil burned off. my codes were 301, 303 & 304. Hope this helps other Dodge 3.9 owners.

Message: You can not just throw parts at the P0300 code. You have to diagnose the problem with a set strategy of testing each individual component. Many things can set off this code with is multiple cylinder misfire. Leaking gaskets, vacuum leaks, cam/crank sensors, wiring including grounds(check all thoroughly for opens/shorts/ground issues. Plugs, wires, distributor-cap and rotor, ignition coil, asd relay, fuel pump and its relay. Even the canister purge solenoid can cause this problem. Throwing parts just wastes money, test and only replace what is defective.

Message: I'm having similar problem with my 96 Dodge Van with the 3.9 engine. But there are some differences. First, it idles fine when the engine is cold. I don't have any problems until the engine reaches operating temp.
Engine idles fine in Park and Neutral even after engine warms up.
It begins running rough and throwing PO300 code when engine warms up AND you shift to Reverse or Drive. No matter how rough it gets and after it starts throwing dead cylinder codes for 1,3 and 5; I can shift back to Park and Neutral and it immediately starts to idle smooth. It's like flipping a switch. Park or Neutral idles great; Reverse or Drive idles rough and throws misfire codes. I've got new sensors on throttle body and new fuel pump. Vacuum seems strong.
There is a thin film of oil on the insides of the manifold. While I know this is not a good sign, I don't understand why shifting into Park or Neutral causes engine to run fine.
Thanks for any help,
Mac

Message: Your van is from the stoner age. Did you try cleaning or replacing the crank sensor, proper firing of the cylinders will need a good signal from this sensor.
But first clean your throttle body and idle air control.

Message: Dodge must mopar sensors. Anything els is problematic. I'd do
cheep things first like check plugs/wires and change if
damaged. It might run good in park but when u put in gear u
put more strain on the motor causing the missfire. Change the
distributor cap and rotor. It's cheep and can't hurt where it's a
old van. Un plug all connection u can see in the wire harness
to check for burnt connection or frayed wires. Change air
filter(take it out and see if it runs better in gear) I've seen air
filter stall engines befor. Can be a lot of things but just don't
throw money in it whiteout checking everything. My problem
was a aftermarket 02 sensor that wasn't mopar. Put in a mopar
and worked perfect

Message: Thanks. I've already done everything mentioned above while trying to solve another problem:
New crank sensor, new plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap.
I may have stumbled on to the solution. I did clean the throttle body and also sprayed carb cleaner inside the manifold.
This didn't solve the problem so just for the heck of it I disconnected the pcv valve which was about 2 months old. The engine smoothed out almost immediately. The number molded on the pcv valve is 2103. I ran this number on the internet and it appears to be the wrong valve for my engine. Looks like the local parts store sold me the wrong one. I've ordered an OEM Mopar pcv valve from a supplier on ebay.
Thanks for all the help.
