Subject: "The Right Stuff" or High Tak? IP: Logged
Message: I was going to replace the intake manifold gaskets (with Fel-Pro gasket set)and add the hughes aluminum plenum plate and was wondering what sealant to use on the gaskets to insure longer life.
"The Right Stuff" looks good but I haven't come across any people that have used it for this application.
High-Tak In one thread Larry mentioned he used with no problems
then of course there is;
Locktite 518
Black/Copper/Orange/Red RTV
No Sealant
One more thing to keep in mind is that I live in AK which goes through a lot of temperature swings
Thanks A Bunch!

Message: The intake flange gasket no sealer but I always
use the spray hig tak on the pletium covers
wire wheel all the bolts and use a cleaning tap
in the holes and a drop of oil on the bolts
than torque from senter out side to side
snug than 4 foot pounds than 8 than 12 and go
over it a few times it takes about a 1/2 hour
to torque it right so take your time here
this is where a clicker wrench comes in real
handy

Message: Thanks for the response Larry. Have you or anyone else used "The Right Stuff" with success? It ain't cheap so it must be good...right??
Hughes Engines suggests adding a little blue thread lock to the bolts, torque 48 in/lb, 84in/lb twice, and they supplied a torque pattern.
I'll be using all new bolts, and a calibrated torque wrench (fancy-dancy... since I work on airplanes) so no calibrated elbow here.
Thanks again and let me know what you all think of "The Right Stuff" I am quite curious of it's performance.

Message: I personally think "The Right Stuff" is great, mainly because the company I work for sells it. I can tell you it is a very good seal, I have used it in many applications from fire protection seals to valve cover gaskets and it has worked better than any fel-pro I have seen. I know it is very oil resistant and can work from -75F degrees all the way up to 450F degrees. I love it. Give it a try

Message: I was pretty impressed with "The Right Stuff" sealant, it's not like the black rtv (which is what it looks like) it seems more "fibrous". After I smeared it on the gaskets I tried getting it off my hands and let me tell you... that stuff doesn't come off easy once it starts to cure. Its still in my hands in some places (4 days later!!). So far I like the "stuff" and haven't had any problems with the plenum or intake gasket leaks.

Message: I was talking about the intake flange bolts
12 foot pounds
12 inch pounds = 1 foot pound
I have never used the right stuff sealer
Black RTV, Blue silicon and high tac spray or the
old stand by permatex
I also use the high tac spray on the steel head
gaskets all the time
There are a lot of sealers out there
JB weld locktight also has the same thing caled
locktight lock weld this is some naraly stuff
that has many aplications I use this on oil pans
some vintage cars there is no replacement so first
I brasse the hole shut and use this on the inside
and have never got a leak I am talking 50 to 100
year old cars when there is no replacement avalible
