Subject: Larry-Question on TPS IP: Logged
Message: I saw a post last week where Larry said the symptoms of erratic starting or poor idle could either be the TPS or IAC. My 02 3.9 with 63K miles will periodically not kick over on the first start so I want to try changing the TPS. Does the new TPS go right into the throttle Body opening without aligning the sensor head with anything? That is a simple remove and replace. I've had halo's in my DAK for the last 15K miles and the idle just seems to be a bit off. If TPS doesnt solve it I will probably remove the halo's and just go with platinum plugs.
One other question. I planning to replace my thermostat. I used to use Indian Head gasket shelac on the gasket to adhere to the housing and manifold. Do you all recommend just using the gasket without shelac? Thx in advance>>>AJ

Message: With a new gasket and clean serface's no sealer
needed
The Throttle position sensor drivers side of body
yes they just bolt on
But you can take a drill just bigger than the
hole in the bushing let the drill catch the
bushing will spin and heat up and with a little
presure they will push right out
now you can rotate it a small amount and the
best voltage is .75 volts this is the optimal
setting
anywhere between .5 .75 is fine check what you
have first for volts. if its below .5 there will
be a slight flat spot just off idle
just use 2 little washers and do not over tighten
What I said is if you suspect the TPS as a
starting problem just push the throttle slightly
when starting if it starts ok than yes tps
The IAC back of TB when you shut the engine off
it should pull back this is what makes it rev
at startup if it does not do this it is not
working properly you can see this with a scanner
or with a good light just look down the hole
center back it will be back off the seat when
engine off now start and watch it will move
forward watch out for moving parts stand on a
block and look down the hole
another easy test is to put your thumb over this
hole when idling it shold slow aprox 100 200rpm
and as soon as you remove your thumb it will rev
up and than settle down around 700rpm is normal
this will tell you if its working right
when ever you change the tps start and stop the
engine 3 times it will than learn the new setting
for idle
check volts key on engine off center wire + pos
and a good ground just use a sewing needle to
back probe the wire about 1" in you will hit the
termanal
these are all quick easy tests for those who have
no scaner to see whats going on

Message: ?? when I check my TPS at idle I get .57 and goes up to .58 sometimes, my ? is this normal or TPS going bad. Did check with key on not running for smooth voltage changes which didn't see any spikes just wish I had a graph to confirm this, and idles around 680-700 rpm's on my scanner.

Message: it should not change
if anything it should go down when watching it
from batt drain if it sits at .57 than changes
to 5.8 yes its going bad
remove the bushings and set it higher to like
.7 .75 this will get you off the bad spot and
than it will work fine

Message: Larry, I recently went ahead and changed with a new sensor and when I ring it out with my meter voltage is .75 volts won't have to drill out the bushings lucky me or ?? and my erractic idle cold went away because I pulled throttle body and gave it good cleaning and did IAC while I was in there. After almost 90,000 miles it was due, dont know ifthe good cleaning solved my cold idle problem or it getting warmer here in MI might have a lazy 02 starting to act up.

Message: you got real lucky with the .75
This will also give you a little better throttle
response and a faster response of the o/d and
lockup down shifts when crusing and passing a
slow poke
It was probably a combination of both tps and
sticky iac

Message: Yes definetly have better shift points not as harsh and looking to pass a slow poke LOL... and do have better throttle response. But what are the chances of getting TPS with good voltage reading, now I also wondering if the TPS always at .57 at idle new or wore out in sense these are like volume switch on a radio they wear out and get that nasty scratch noise LOL...

Message: I have a 1998 Dodge dakota that
has recently started acting really
bad. I can start it and it will run
but sometimes while driving it
will start to spit and sputter and
cut off and it is a bitch to get
started again. It will backfire the
situation is getting worse. When
it starts it idles right around 700
but when it acts up it will dip to
about 500 and sometimes not
even pressing the gas will keep it
running . Please tell me what to
do to do to fix this the situation
had become very frustrating. Is it
the TPS or IAC
