Hello all, I am having trouble with my 91 v6 3.9l dodge dakota. I have taken off one of the plugs and stuck a screw driver in there and put it near some metal. had someone try and start it. No spark. I replaced the rotor and the cap and it start for a minute or so and then died and wont start.
My question is the screw driver method good for checking spark? How do go about troubleshooting the problem.

there is nothing wrong checking spark as you did. i usually just pull the wire off of the distributor cap or plug and set it next to a ground.
you may want to see if you have any codes stored first. could be a few things causing no spark. and invest 20 bucks in a Haynes or Chiltons repair manual.
it could be a bad splice. i think it's called #115 on the wiring diagram. underneath the underhood fusebox about 6-8 inches down in the wiring harness. 3 wires into 1. you'll have to unwrap the wires and redo that splice.

ok ...look on your wiring harness...youll see a barrel connector....10 wires into a male side and same on the female side unplug it..you will see the pins are corroded off....you will need to cut the wires one bye one and soldier each one back togeather....its a common thing for the connectors to be bad....gl
