Hello everyone. I have 92 3.9 dakota . I am having problems starting the truck when it has sat for several hours .

Symptoms are :

1- when I turn the key ..many times it takes a few tries before it will crank.

2- when it does try to start ...it runs real rough and won't idle ...typically I have to feather the gas to get it stay running or it will die .After 3-5 attempts the truck fires up and runs decent.

3- When driving and i let off the gas or barely press it ...the truck will seem to lose all power and feel like its stalling out ...if i stick my foot in it ....it seems to come back to life .

I have changed the TPS, and 1- 02 sensor. Changed plugs and wires. Have checked everywhere for vacuum leaks and have none that are apparent .The check engine light works ..but does not come on or stay on . I am at a bit of a loss as wtf to do . The cat makes lots of noise and am wondering if theres crap loose in there that kinda freezes into place when the truck cools ...which I'm thinking would affect cold start . When I let off the gas Im wondering if the lack of pressure if sucking the losse pieces into the pipe creating no air flow through the pipe .

Any suggestions or ideas would be helpful ...thank you .

check your battery and alternator.
1. weak battery wont crank the motor cause it doesnt have enough power.

2.when it does start the weak battery and or alternator isnt allowing any of your electrical components....sensors, ect to work properly, which would make it run like crap.

3.if its not charging when you take your foot off the gas the alternator is no longer spinning very fast. so therfore it cant keep up with the electricty needed. and it dies...

i hope this helps and then again i could be completly wrong but its a good start.

try turning the key from "off" to "on" not start 2 or 3 times before actually turning it to start. the first symptoms you describes what could be the fuel system losing pressure after not runnning for a while.

suggestion - try putting a fuel pressure gage on the fuel and check the pressure while running and watch the rate it falls after shutdown. if it falls fast thats your problem.

the second could be caused from the first but sounds like a weak battery. the first signs of a weak battery will be rough/ erractic idle on the first start of the day. the battery can have enough power to start the truck and still be weak enough to cause the PCM to lose idle memory.

suggestion - have the battery load tested and clean all the connections.

could also be a dirty TB/ IAC. take the TB off and do a thorough cleaning with carb or injector cleaner.

if you don't have one get either a Haynes, Chiltons or Factory Service manual. any of the first 2 will be 20 bucks well spent.

daddio, what about the fact that it wont even crank when he first tries it sometimes, thats got to be an a battery or alt. prob because even it the fuel pump had an issue it would still crank just not start. but we both may be right he could have two problems going on. VERY possible

some people say "crank" when they mean "start". could also be the infamous #115 splice. you gotta start somewhere. start with the free / cheapest stuff first.

o i c. yeah the wonderful 115 splice. thats a great place to start, i agree. its so nice when a stupid, cheap little fix fixes your problems. and if that isnt it have your battery load tested and your charging system checked. any shop can do this for you or you can buy your own battery tester.
