I have a 98 Dakota Sport 4x2 Club Cab. The transmission seems to hold second gear to very high revs before shifting into 3rd with a pretty good jump. Seems to only exist between 2nd and 3rd at about 50 KM/H, the engine has a very deep rev and hits between 3000-4600 RPM before shifting. I have not had the truck very long so have not done any tranny maintenance. It has 166000 K on it. I checked the fluid level and it is fine, fluid is very clean. What could be causing this issue? I may be wrong on the gear, t could be happening between 3rd/4th.

Check and see if its throwing a code first. Most auto parts scan your comp for free anymore. If not take it in for a band adjustment. Mine was doing that and the adjustment fixed it..

Took it in, no codes. The guy took it for a test drive and it was shifting fine for him so he couldn't figure anything wrong with it.

My 98 Dakota V6 has 280,000 miles on it and I have the same problem. There is "slippage" between 2nd and 3rd but mine doesn't rev as high as yours does. If I'm climbing a hill then it happens, but if I am going down hill or on a flat road I can ease up on the throttle before the shift and it will be a smoother transition.
I talked to a few tranny shops and they said it's time for a re-build when the "clutch packs" go like that.
