Message: my stepsons dakota has developed some sort of transmission problem any ideas would be helpful .
1994 dakota v6 auto
I've had the rubber hose going to the trans cooler fail twice ( passenger side both times ) First time the hose was old with signs of dry rot , replaced with new topped off the fluid every thing ran fine.
A day or so later the same hose burst again , bad hose ?
Replaced the hose a second time , top off the fluid everything worked ok . he drove the truck about 50 miles no problems .
The next day he drives about 10 miles then the truck wont move in any gear , after letting it sit for a few minutes start it up and it would work fine for a few minutes did this several time till I could get it off the main road . Any Ideas
Thanks Jared

Message: Drain the fluid - when you pull off the pan
look for 'filings' .
Will need at least new filter and new ATF-4 fluid
Check band adjustments while open .

Right now - filter is getting totally plugged up
letting it sit lets the filings and dirt fall off.

Message: That rubber hose is of special oil-resistant construction. If you did not buy hose rated for transmission fluid, that's why it failed so soon. The fluid will attack regular rubber hose and cause it to fail quickly.

Message:
The hose was marked a Goodyear Transmission hose .
So far I was able to drain the fluid ,remove the pan and filter . The filter was very dark brown/black , the fluid looked good but I had just added a couple of quarts from the hose problems .
I didn't see any filings really just a thin layer of crud on the bottom of the pan . The magnet didn't have all that much on it either .

Message: Trans cooler may be plugged up , or the
'cooler' section in the bottom of the radiator
if it is also in the loop ?
Need to flush these out some way..
