Subject: pinging 1992 V6

I have a 1992 dak with a newer longblock in it. I use 87 octane and have only had my truck about 2500 miles. It pings sometimes on steep hills or when I almost floor it, more so when it's hot. Is this the nature of the beast, or does mine have a problem. Thanks for reading, any input is welcome.

Sounds like the timing could be off. Check the timing. Or you could just run high octane. You say it has a newer longblock. Is it a stock replacement or does it have performance parts? If it's higher compression than normal you'll have to run higher octane. Just do something to fix it, pinging is not good for the engine.

I had a dealer tell me that certain brands of gass are formulated way different then others Specificaly he mentioned BP as being a brand that will cause pinging ina 3.9, 5.2 or 5.9 Dodge engine. Has to do with the oxygen content of an additive that is required by the EPA and how much of it they use.

I would agree with the type of gas that is used. I find my Dak runs better with Shell 87/89 octane better than BP or Amaco. My trucks runs like crap on Citgo gas. So I usually end up spending a few cents more for the better gas. Save the wear and tear on the engine is how I look at it.

The pinging is minimal, but I do use BP 87. I think I'll try shell 87. Thanks to all.
