Message:
I know it has been asked before and I have been doing research, I just want to hear some other people’s opinion. I have a 93 3.9 with 204000 and the motor is getting tired, IV got the 42rh auto and 4x4 not sure what the transfer case is. I can get a 94 5.9 with 125000 for $250 comes with the flex plate and is a complete motor. I can go to the junk yard and pull the wiring harness off of a 95 318 Dakota. I was just wondering will the 5.9 bolt to the 42rh? And will the torque converter bolt to the flex plate? And will everything else bolt in the same place? I would like anyone’s advice or opinions.
Thanks
Adam

not sure about the harness
the 93 had a vac/mechanical EGR

the 95 has an electronic sensor on the EGR

the 42 will physically bolt up, but you really need a 46rh (a518).

your transfer case should be a np231

Don't forget that the 5.9 is a external balanced engine while the 3.9 is balanced internal. You will need to add the balance weights to the 3.9 torque converter. I'm not sure about the 93 to 95 but I know on a 99 you can use a wire harness from a 5.2 BUT if your going to use the PCM for the 5.9 you will need to add the extra wires for the O2 sensors I believe the 5.2 used one O2 sensor after the "Y" pipe just before the cat and the 5.9 has two ... one behind each exhaust manifold.

Thanks for all the replies, if I came across a 5.2 would that be an easier swap than the 5.9 being the 5.2 was offered in my gens Dakota’s? and would the 42 be able to take the power of a mildly built 5.2? And is the 5.9 balanced on the torque converter or is the flex plate balanced?

you won't need to balance the torque converter if the 360's
flexplate is balanced.
