Message: Ok so here we go. I'm preparing to do a 318 conversion in my V6 dak. it's a 98 with a 5 speed and I'm putting in a 318 from a 97 Ram. I understand that I'll need the ECM and to do the wiring for the additional fuel injectors. Will the motor fit in with the existing fan cowl or will I have to get a new one of those? or will I even really need that? I noticed there wasn't much room between the V6 and the fan cowl. Also, am I correct that most of the components will transfer over? since the 3.9 is basically a 318 with the front two cylinders missing. Any help would be appreciated.

Message: Drew, most everything should fit ok, the motor mounts, ect are the same, I would change the radiator to a V8 if its different. (larger than the V6) I think you are talking about the fan shroud (cowl) and yes I would keep it, it will help cool the engine. You are correct that you will need a V8 computer, and wiring harness as well. There have been a few people here that have done that swap here and you may find some old threads where they talk about it. I think it is fairly easy to change. I have done a bunch of things like that just not that exact swap.
I have put a 75 Caddy engine and trans. in a 77 Chevy pick up, that was a lot of fun to drive, and it got better fuel mileage than one of my friends 350 powered pick up. (the caddy engine was 500 cubic inches)
Good Luck

Message: radiators are the same from V6 to V8 for those years. the V8 fan shroud is much shorter. you can try cutting yours down, or just swap in an electric fan.

Message: Thanks for the advice from both of you. I bet that pickup with the caddy engine was fun to drive. It does seem like a pretty straight forward swap. I'm glad the radiators are the same that makes that part easier. As far as the fan shroud, which one is the easier route to go? or if they're about the same difficulty which one is the better route to go? Again I really appreciate the advice. being a soldier I'll have a day or two to complete this but if i can get everything together I should be able to knock it all out in one day and that makes the advice even more appreciated.

Message: i know on the older dakotas you needed to swap out the oil pan because there is a cross member in the dakotas that get in the way
