Subject: Random rough starting IP: Logged
Message: All: Periodically this winter when I try starting my 02 CC w/3.9 it will start and idle briefly at 250 rpms buck, stumble and stall. It will recover if I keep the gas peddle depressed for a few seconds and keep it running at a higher rpm. It has done this several times now. It has 62,000 miles on it and I put halo plugs and brass cap & rotor in about 10K miles ago. I'm wondering if it could be the IAC or TPS. Has anyone experienced this symptom before? If so, what could it possibly be? BTW no codes are present. Thx>>AL

Message: if it's only doing this on a cold/ first morning start-up, i'd have the battery load tested. if it does it after being run a while, i'd clean the IAC and TB then check the TPS.

Message: Thx Daddio. The battery is new, purchased just before the winter. There is no problem cranking so I dont think its the battery. Could you tell me what the symptoms are for a bad TPS? Thx again>>>AJ

Message: new or not
you've no idea how long it sat around
you should start by getting it load tested
then i'd check injectors
possible 1 or more is leaking

Message: even if there is no problem cranking it over the battery can get weak enough for the PCM to lose idle memory. and as "well" stated, batteries can sit around on a shelf for a while before being put into service. hell, it's free to get a battery load tested.

Message: OK Guys I finally had the chance to get the battery load tested. It checked out fine. Lately the engine doesnt seem to resond to pressing the gas peddle about half way down. It seems you need to almost floor it to get the 3.9 moving. Any ideas on what can be causing this. Thx again>>AJ

Message: check the TPS. you can do this with a DVOM(digital volt/ohm meter). with the key "on" truck not running, with the positive lead, backprobe the center wire on the connector on the TPS. the negative lead to ground. you should read around .55vdc to .75vdc. now slowly rotate the throttle all the way open. it should read 3.75 to 4.5vdc. let the throttle return to the fully closed/ idle position. you should have the same reading as the first you took, if not change the TPS.
also, as you open the throttle, look for any big changes in voltage.
