Subject: 92 with no fire? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 92 dakota with the 3.9 liter that will not get any fire? I replaced the pick up coil, distributor rotor, the coil is fairly new (tested with test light seems to be ok). I don't know what else to check. I took the cap off to see if the rotor is turning when cranking and it does, heard that means the timing chain isn't broken. I don't have a timing light to check the timing, should I try and pick one up? The last time I had problems with the truck the check engine light came on and the code it gave me was something like the computer is messed up. The last time I drove the truck it kinda cut out a time or two nothing to noticeable though. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Message: common problem, the forums are full of this same question and answer.
You can even google it. or go to mark.dodgedakotas.com and search for it.
about 8" down from the PDC, you'll have to unwrap the wires, you'll find the #115 splice.
3 wires-to-1. cut the crimp, solder it good. Re-wrap the wire bundle. Even if it looks good, redo it.

Message: try what Dan M said. might i suggest you purchase a repair manual form the parts house. they are only 20 bucks and it will save you that ten-fold.
also, do not try to set the timing. the timing is controlled by the PCM. turning the distributor only adjusts the Injector Sync and if you get it too far out it will not run.
