Subject: Tips for changing a water pump on a 1997

Well after replacing my thermostat last night and filling the radiator up I thought I would be fine to drive today. Well I neglected to see the massive puddles of coolent outside in the frozen tundra of Michigan. Climbed underneath the truck and saw it was leaking out the bottom of the water pump. So what are some tips you would recommend for swapping out the water pump?

I don't remember the size but I think it is 1 7/16. I made my own wrench. If you can weld or a friend can it is really easy to make and get the nut to losen.

Other than that I always recommened that everyone have a repair manual for every vehicle they own. They usually pay for themselves in one job.

Hey Im doing this right now, it is a 1 7/16 wrench, the thing is massive, and sort of expensive. what i did was purchase the wrench, and also a pair of chain vice grips. It looks like your typical locking vice grips, but with a chain.

Get a buddy to hold the water pump (with clutch and fan still attacthed to it) once youve taken it off the block. wrap the chain vice grips arounf the belt pully on the fan clutch assmebly, get the wrench or channel locks on the nut, and while your buddy is holding on tightly, crank the sucker off. I busted a knuckle but it worked.

You generally don't need anything to hold blade or pump. I the wrench you buy or make is long enough you need only give it smart rap with a heavy hammer and it loosens right up.
