Subject: Starter or Alternator?Not Starting

Hi Everyone,
I am trying to figure out the best way to pin down the problem with our truck. I think its a basic starter issue, but want to make sure before we spend a bunch of money. We have a 2002 dodge dakota 3.9L RWD, that was running fine two days ago. We went to start it today, and nothing but ticking when we turn it over. The more we try, the fainter the ticking gets, like the starter is trying to go but can't. We just got a new battery two weeks ago, and the terminals and wires are fine as far as I can see. Any suggestions besides the normal hammer to the starter trick? Thanks for all your help.
Dakota Girl.

double check all your connections at the battery and the starter. after you have verified everything is clean and tight, try starting again. if the problem persaists, i'd pull the starter and bring it in to get it checked. preferably a shop that specializes in starters and alterantors. most parts houses will test them for free but i don't trust most of those guys in my area. you may want to have the battery loas tested also. even though it's new there could still be a porblem with it.

most shops that specialize can reapir the starter with quality components that will last longer than anything you can buy at A/Z or Advance.

do your lights come on when you turn the key on and then the headlights if they do and when you try to start it they dont dim. then its a starter. if they dont or really really dim when you crank it then its a alternator. You can always try to jump start.
