Subject: Idle Surge

Message:
Hi,

I have a 1998 dakota 3.9 2wd, the idle goes up and down, more so when cold.

My husband cleaned the throttle body and replaced the idle valve, tps, temperature sensor, plugs, cap, rotor and all vacuum lines. The truck has no problems when driving it.

No codes at all.

Can someone help!

Could it be the map sensor?

you mentioned it does this more so when cold. you need to clean the battery connections and have the battery load tested. most parts houses will test the battery for free.

a weak battery can start the truck fine but, at the same time, cause an an erratic/ surging idle at the first cold start in the morning.

There is an Idle air intake port located on the very front of the throttle body right near the intake manifold. It is getting clogged. Eventually it will clogg enough the engine will shut off.

Hi,

We had the battery load tested, no problem there.

Napanic,

Are you talking about the port that goes to the map sensor? if so that was cleaned, the whole throttle body was taken off.

ok, you've tested the battery and cleaned the throttle body/ IAC. next thing to check would be the TPS.(throttle position sensor). it's located on the driver side of the throttle body.

They replaced the TPS.

Battery may be OK, but check the connections, including the infamous bad splice.

missed that Bob. i thought the factory had done a better job or gotten rid of the splice in later years, like '96 & up?

well u said that the IAC was replaced? If the parts were bought at auto zone return them and go buy some the parts from napa. auto zones parts are garbage you can have a brand new IAC from auto zone and it will work better then the bad one but still not the way it should.

Mario,

Thanks for the info, we did buy the IAC from Napa. I wonder if the coil could cause the idle surge, but again this truck has a lot of power at highway speeds.

another thing that could cause this is your throttle cable being to tight... it should not be loose and sloppy but not taunt either. this can allow small amounts of air in causing your idle to vary other than that im out of ideas. my truck did the same thing 2 but i replaced the iac and it was fine....good luck.

I have recently experienced a similar issue on my 2003. What I hvae suspected, but not inspected yet is the vapor recovery vacuum line at the neck of the fuel filler tube. I talked to a local NAPA dealer, and they suggested that even if you do not top off the tank, the vapor recovery tubing will rot out over time from the fuel collection that builds up. If this is not the problem, check the Purge seliniod valve and make sure it is functioning correctly as well.

Sorry to double post, but one easier fix would be to replace the Gas Cap. It did not help me, but there are a number of others that have had a great deal of success with this. It seems that as the cap ages, it leaks an excessive amount of air into the tank, causing the vapor recovery unit to be overloaded with Fuel vapors. This will eventually give you a Flooding effect by not allowing enough fresh air into the mix. Don't know if this will help, but for $10.00 to $20.00 bucks its worth the try.

Thanks for the help, the gas cap was replaced because my husband wanted a locking cap.

As regards to the purge valve, I can see that it may be the problem but there is no check engine light on.

Should I just replace it? It is a 1998!

Sorry not to respond quicker, but I have been working on my water pump replacement. I visited the Dodge website, and was looking at the Check Engine code P 0455. This is the code that will be thrown if you have either an excessive leak in the EVAP system, or if the Purge valse is the problem. They have some tips on checking it that involve using a hand vacuum pump on one side of the valve. You are to pump it to 10 hg, and see if the vacuum will hold. If it does not then the valve is bad. My understanding is that this part is fairly inexpensive, but be sure that the tubing is in good shape prior to performing the test. I would recommend replacing the tubing as a start, they are more than likely in need of replacement anyway, then see if that will work first. If not then just replace the purge valve. You may want to ensure that the electrical connections are good on the purge valve as well. Hope this works.

Hi,

Thanks for info, all vacuum lines are ok, purge valve checks ok. There are no codes present.

We are going to change the Air Charge Temp Sensor, it is 11 yrs. old.

i personally have not had this problem but i have heard things from other people that the o ring around the IAC gets cold, hardens and lets air seep through causing the idle to jump around and when the motor warms up it expands and seals the leak. once again i have not experienced this myself but i have heard it from others and it wouldnt be a bad thing to try.

put a little high temp silicone sealant around the iac, and dont worry it wont be glued on so you will be able to get it back off.

Yes you are helping, and thank you very much.

Will check cam sensor. Have a question. If you unplug the I.A.C. should you get a check engine light? cause when I unplugged it while it was running no check engine light came on.
