Subject: 3.7 - Radiator Fan Question - HELP!!!
IP: Logged

Message:
I believe my electric radiator fan is bad. My engine will overheat if it idols for a long period of time or if I'm driving extremely slow. When I'm at normal highway speed, the engine stays cool. When idoling, I can watch the temp. gauge climb, but the fan never kicks on.

My question is about a fan that O'Reily Autoparts sold me. The name brand is Hayden Automotive. Upon closer inspection, it appears to be a fan that is made for several different vehicles. My factory fan has a wiring harness. This one has only a yellow and a black wire. Can this one be used? Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

are you sure it is the fan motor and not just a relay or fuse? have you tried putting 12vdc directly to your stock fan the see if it runs or not?

Probable that black wire needs to be grounded
= attached to chassis
and yellow to 'power' .
There should have been some kind of diagram
or instructions with that fan ?

I checked the fuse under the hood for the fan. It's not blown.

did you check the relay? or put 12vdc directly to the fan from the battery? that's an easy way to make sure the fan motor is actually bad.

I will try that. Not trying to sound dumb or anything, but how would I connect 12vdc to the fan from the battey? The fan has a wiring harness with a quick connect on the end of the wires.

disconenct that plug for the stock fan. run 1 wire connected to the positive of the battery into one side of the plug then run one from the other side of the plug that you can momentarily touch to ground and if the motor is still good it will turn. to check to see if it is a relay, unplug a known good relay, such as one for the horn or a/c and swap it for the one for the cooling fan. then if you fan works, it's the relay.

I'm back daddio. It was in fact the radiator fan. I hooked the new one directly up to the battery and it ran fine. When I hooked up the old one to the battery, nothing happened. I can't believe the fan motor just died like that. Thanks for your help.
