unless tightened incorrectly ?
I put 268,000 K or 164,000 miles on my 95
bearings were still good.

Message: there are some that have posted on here they say they changed just the bearings at a third of the price of a new hub. buy a matching bearing but you'll have to find a shop that can press out the old bearing and press in the new bearing.

Message: I noticed mine were bad when I was regreasing them one day. Just fell apart in my hand, didn't even make a noise for warning while driving on it. I coulda just pieced it back together and put it back in and it would have still done the job! LOL!!

Message: Hey,how many out there have a press out there to do this ? And if you don't would you trust a reputable shop ? I guess Iam a fuss bucket don't like anyone working on my truck but myself without my insight. These bearings are not sold by themselves in NEWER trucks they only want to sell hub with bearing as Iam finding the OLDER trucks I can get bearings all day and press them out myself, not trying to be smar!ass know all here

Message: For around $400 you can get a "Hub Tamer" and do it yourself with out removing the hub. Better control than a hydrolic press too.

Message: Where do inquire to finding this if I wanted ro purchase thus expensive tool that I would probaly only use once again not to be smar!ass better off just buying new hub w/ new bearing. My main concern with my post was is the common problem to add to my list that I have to pass along to other Dakota freinds ?? Ive never had one fail so thats why I asked my past Dakota I had 91' never failed me now my current 02' driver making me think wheres my noise coming from around 55-60 as Iam trying get to 70-75 like everyone else to be safe and when freeway bends on to right as I go into it noise disappears ? when I go back to straight noise there but faded out some but there but 55-60 wow what the ?? is that Iam hearing??

Message: Pete,
You can google the tool. I agree it is expensive. I just spent the weekend under my 2002. Ball joints, tie rod ends, brakes, and of course another wheel bearing. If yours changes when you turn the wheel a bit then I would definately suspect a bearing. Mine didn't seem bad until I had everything torn apart. I did have the growl/hum also.

Message: you could try to find a local machine/ jobber shop that could press the bearings in and out for a much less than buying a press for a one time use. there was also another post on doing it withouot a press. something about knocking the old bearing out and then heating the hub in an oven and putting the bearing in a freezer. the bearing just slips in.

Message: daddio,
that's great, but it's only half the job. You still have to get the hub back into the center of the new bearing. There are 3 pieces with the bearing receiver, bearing and hub.

Message: Pete, try jacking up one side and grab the top and bottom of the tire and try to move it up and down. If it has any play it could be bearings. I would check both sides to see if one side is any different than the other, plus you can turn the wheel and listen to see if it makes any noise like a grinding, or rough feel as you turn the wheel.
Good Luck
