Message: I'm new to this site, this is my first posting. I think I joined at the right time.
My truck is a 93 4x2 reg cab 5psd. My dad bought the truck new, got a promotion at work which gave him a company truck. So I got the truck with 2000 miles on it, when I turned 16. So the first 2000 miles were easy miles. The next 220,000 miles have not been as easy. It's been a great truck for me. Changed the starter, water pump, fuel pump, rack and pinion, driveline, clutch. All that happend after the first 120,000 miles.
Then about 2 months ago I got a check engine light for a code 27. I thought 222,000 miles was enough for the stock inj, so I replaced them. Light is still on. Checked wiring and this website for info. Finally took it to the dealer, first time ever. They told me the timing chain is shot and the distributor bushing is WAY out of spec, causing the timing to be so far off, it throws the code 27. I asked them if they checked the ECM, to see if it was bad, they told me they couldn't ( sounds like horse$h!t to me). But I know the engine is worn out. They wanted $1200 to fix the timing chain and dist. bushing. hahahahaha. ( I had a good laugh over that). Told them NOT to touch it, I'd pick it up.
I've decided not to scrap it, but to rebuild it.
The only mods I've done to this are K&N and flowmaster, but I'd like to do more with a rebuild. I'm a diesel mechanic and plan on doing the work myself. Any advice or info on rebuilding one of these would help. I live in Commiefornia, so it has to pass the smog-nazis test. I'm also rebuilding my 69 Charger, so I can't spend a ton of money on this. I know this post is long so if you actually read it, thanks. Anyone suggestions? Clay

Message: My suggestion would be to buy a rebuilt long block, and make a few changes to that. I rebuilt my 1988 @ 172,000 miles and I had to bore/hone cyl. Regrind crank, mill the block/heads, replace just about every wear item and the cost came to $2000. I have been driving it since 2003, and it gets good gas mileage, but if I was to do it over, I would just buy a rebuilt/remaned and go from there, it would probably be cheaper in the long run.
Just my opinion.
Good Luck

Message: Another option would be to get a good used motor
from a bone yard
A good used motor with under 100,000 can be had
for around $500 to $600
just a thought
