Message: Hello. I have this ticking noise coming from the right side of my motor. It sounds as if it is coming from the valve area. Its sorta like a metal on metal sound and i have searched around and I cannot find a way to adjust the valves on this motor. Could it be that they are gettign sloppy or is the lifters or maybe is it the timing chain.
If someone has had this happen to them or if someone knows what the problem could be, could you please chime in.
Thanks
Steve

Message: TIMING CHAIN TIMING CHAIN TIMING CHAIN!!!!! i can almost guarantee that it is the timing chain, the v6 dakota has a tensioner on the timing chain which goes bad, once this happens the chain gets slack in it and clangs against the gears the tensioner is usually provided in the timing chain kit you can buy at any local autoparts store.

Message: Let the truck idle and bend down like your
looking under the front bumper if you hear it
there its the timing chain
chain sprokets and tensioner needed
could also be a bad lifter, worn rocker arms
or shaft
the 87 is a flat tappet motor 88 and up roller
lifters
