Subject: Transmission Questions IP: Logged
Message: Hey all! Hoping to find out some information on my transmission. I have a 2004 Dak SXT. It's a RWD 5spd manual. I been racking my brain trying to figure out if I have the NV1500 or the NV3500. I think that it is the NV1500 because of the distinctive webbing on the case and the shifter being on the tailpiece of the trans. If this is so, can I install the ONLY short throw shifter kit that I can find for a dakota that is only listed for the R/T model? If the R/T has the 3500, will the same kit work on the SXT with the 1500? Has anyone installed a short throw shifter on the same model truck as mine?
HEEEELLLLLLP!
thanks!

Message: I have no idea on the short throw shifters, but if you call a Dodge dealer parts dept and give them your VIN they can tell you what transmission you have and what rear end gear ratio you have too. I have a 2001 with the 3.9. It has a NV3500 5 speed.
Seems like I saw a really good post on installing a Hurst short throw shifter in a Dakota. I think it was on Dodgeforum.com in the 2nd generation Dakota section. You might search there for it. The guy had to do some modifications to the shifter to get it to fit and clear the dash.

Message: should be the NV3500 unless someone changed it to a NV1500. the NV3500 was never available in a Dak from the factory. there are short throw shifters out there for up to '00 that should fir but will need to be modified as DC changed the dash after '00 and i believe the short throw shifter will contact the dash in the '01-'04's. use Jimmy's links he provided and shift on!

The NV3500 is used on V8 and (2000+ I think) V6 Dakotas. It does not have a removable/separate bell housing.

Message: Thanks for all the info people! What a great help! Although, I've been reading those other threads about the guys who have installed the hurst short throw and now I'm unsure if it is worth the hassle. I think we should try to organize some kind of "petition" to Hurst showing the mods that people had to make to get this thing to work properly. Who knows, maybe they'll throw a proper model into production.
Thanks again!
