Subject: 99 dakota & compressor issue?? IP: Logged
Message: I am wondering how can i tell my compressor may be going? i have a 99 dakota club cab sport V6 magnum. in the summer when AC was turned on, i could hear it cycle on and off quite fast. service guy i use said it was low on refrig. and thats why it cycles on and off so fast. so they charged up the system, and cked hoses etc and all was fine, yet it seemed the AC at the time, didnt get as cold as it shouldve for just getting charged.... NOW its getting cold here in PA. and im needing to run the defroster in mornings and so it too cycles on and off faster then what i think is normal. Doesnt the compressor run the defroster and AC?? do you think its the compressor going? i looked at it while defrost was on and i can see the belt going over it, and it spins and stops spinning as it cycles on and off. thats normal ??right?? any help here would be appreciated. is there a test i can do to find out if in fact compressor is going??

Message: sounds like it's low on refridgerant again. your service people must have missed a leak somewhere in the system. usually when the compressors start to go bad they get really noisy. kind of like a rattling noise. they can put a dye in the system to check for leaks. if it is leaking, it will cause the compressor to terminate itself prematurely.
