Subject: Tough to start cold IP: Logged
Message: My truck is a '00 QC 3.9L 5speed. Most of the time if it has been sitting for at least an hour or so, it will crank and turnover, but not start on the first try. Starts right up on the second try. If I hold it on start for more than 6-7 seconds on the first try, it might start.
I have already done the standard tune up stuff like plugs, wires and dist cap/rotor. Gas mileage is ok (16-18 city 20-21 hwy) and engine runs fine once it starts.
The battery is probably only about a year or 1.5 years old, but I'm thinking maybe it needs to be tested? Any other ideas?

Message: I had the same problem just like 5 months ago. I got the load battery test done and it was about 11.5 so still good. Normally should be 12. So I knew that it wasn't the battery, so I bought a fuel pressure tester. And after a couple tips that I got from this forum and more tips from some guys of O'relly auto store, I connected the fuel pressure tester on the fuel rail, and I started my truck 4 a couple mins and then turned off, the pressure on the gauge read 48 psi on idle so that was good!... normal range is between 44.2 & 54.2 psi. Came back one hour later and checked the gauge and it was all the way down. ah ha!... My pressure regulator its going bad, and its located on the fuel pump. So what I do for now, I turn the key on and wait for 4 seconds and then start. with that I give time the gas get into the injectors, 'cause my pressure regulator its not holding gas and its going back to the tank. (The pressure regulator its a mechanic system that its not controled by the PCM) Check your fuel pressure it sounds that you have the same problem with the symptoms that you discribe. I hope this helps you.

Message: roberto dak99 is right on this one. there is a check valve in the fuel pump/ regulator assy that is supposed to keep pressure in the system when the engine is off for quicker start ups. they do go bad. you either live with it or change out the assy.

Message: Thanks. I don't have a fuel pressure tester (yet), but it sounds like I probably have the same problem.
