Subject: Burning oil IP: Logged
Message: Hey all, its been...well, a few years since I stopped by here.
I just finished changing the oil in my 2000 Dakota. Sadly it turns out I burnt a little over a quart of oil between my 3000 mile oil changes. I changed the valve cover gaskets last spring, and check the filters for leakage before removing as well as the drain plug. Are their any other common areas for leakage on these trucks besides the head gaskets, that one area I do not want to wrench into while living in an apartment.
Thanks for any help.

Message: are you having any issues with pinging or loss of performance? it could be the plenum gskt leaking. pull the airhat off the TB, open the throttle(engine off of course) and see if there is any oil puddling in the bottom of the intake.

Message: No performance loss. There is some light tapping towards the end of the oil life. I will check around the intake later on. Thanks for the tip.
Hows this for a short antidote:
I moved to VA 3 years ago. At some point I started taking my truck the the local Dodge dealer for maintenance because I became lazy about doing it myself. Twice, not once, they admitted to not tightening down my oil filter which lead to lots of engine rattling and some really harsh words with them. They refused to guarantee my engine for any period of time even though they almost killed it...twice.

Message: PCV valve bad can use some oil
Valve seals
Also a leak at the ends of the intake front and
back
If you suspect the rings try some restore or zmax
and see if it helps that it is the rings what
these products will do is help seal the rings
a litle
A Qt in 3000 is not overly exsesive what you need
to do is determine if its leaking or burning it
you say they left your oil filter lose and caused
the engine to rattle do to a lack of lubrication
that would cause some ring damage also

Message: dont use additives..they are harmful to you engine
but as i think larry failed to say.....if you dont change your oil at 2500 to 3000 miles then your going to have problems like this.......a qt in 3000 is a lot of oil to spew into the sky....
