I read the article in the NY times about that yesterday. I'll be suprised if it goes through. Usually when two big companies merge, at least on of them is not in financial trouble. With both GM and Chrysler having money problems, a merger will not improve their economic positions.

However, it would be fun to see the new Dakota with the 4.3 V6 under the hood or a Silverado with a Hemi.

The other big question...

Will the prices of parts for my Dakota go down, or will the price of parts for my Camaro go up?

Heres the low down on the merger from what I have gathered in my researching in the last few days.

First off, there will be no Dakota-Colorado. Chevy will be closing its last truck/suv plant January 9, 2009, which translates to Chevy will no longer be building trucks and suvs. They want to concentrate on fuel efficient cars.

2. GM doesn't want Chrysler, they want the 11 billion in cash that Chrysler has. Cerberus, Chrysler's current owners, have made it quite clear they no longer want to be in the auto industry. However, they do own a 41-49% stake in GMAC, which is owned of course by GM. They are looking to trade ownership of Chrysler for the remaining stake in GMAC.

3. If GM gets its hands on Chrysler they will most likely merge Jeep with Hummer, killing the Liberty and Compass.

4. GM has no intrest in more infighting with similar models so they will eather close Chrysler and Dodge, or turn around and try to sell them. Nissan is also in talks about buying Chrysler.

5. If GM keeps Chrysler and Dodge, low sellers such as the Sebring, Avenger, PT Cruiser and the such will be killed. The likely survivors will be the 300, Charger, Challenger (to close to the Camaro which would make the Challenger a 1 generation wounder again). I would say the Ram and Dakota would survive but Chevy is killing their trucks and suvs. Good news for soccer moms everywhere, GM will most likely keep Chrysler's minivans which has brought in 25% of Chrysler's revenue over the last 20 some odd years.

If you want me to post the research, please let me know.

That brings to mind, what would happen to Ford? I can see honda making a move to acquire ford.

Honda has good sales numbers on their fuel efficient cars but no truck line. Yeah yeah, I know they make such vehicles as the ridgeline, pilot, and element. But would those don't compare to the F150, navigator, and explorer.

If the GMAC/Chrysler swap doesn't work, then I think nissan could be really interested. They make good selling fuel efficent cars and have a decent truck in the titan, but it's no ram.

I heard a while back Ford and Toyota were talking. Ford already uses the Toyota drive train for the Hybrid Escape. But what would happen to the Ford/Mazda Ranger? Would it become the Mazda B-Tacoma?

Since Ford makes the Truck for Mazda. Mazda would probably drop the truck altogether. i'm sure it's not one of their hot sellers.

Here's a thought to get people talking; with all the mergers and take overs and our present path to socialism, it won't be long before we are like the former Soviet Union and all driving the same vehicle.

GM may swap GMAC and a stake for Chrysler LLC. GM only wants the 11 billion in cash Chrysler has.

Perhaps Nissan will take over the truck line.

Chrysler has used mitubithy and volkswagon motors
in the past remember the K cars with the 4cyl
that was a volks engine

As soon as dalmer went in with chrysle did you
not notice they fazed out all the mopar motors
no more 3.9, 5.2 or 5.9 that to me was enough
to make me cry as I did when the fazed out the
B and RB 383, 400, 440 that was a deprsing thing

Now we will have a dodget or a cevler oh my god
what is happening here maybe in the future we
will have only one car manufacturer in the USA
it will be named USA Automotive LOL and they
will look like hot dogs going down the road LOL

It looks like Nissan is seeking to buy up to 20 percent of Chrysler.

A reuters news article indicated that GM was looking to acquire Chrysler due to the amount of cash it had on hand.

"GM, looking for a lifeline to replenish it's depleted coffers, has been pushing ahead with talks to acquire Chrysler, people briefed on the talks have told Reuters. Although it does not report financial information, Cerberus has said Chrysler ended June with $11.7 billion in cash."

It looks to me as if the vultures sense that the death of Chrysler is near and they want to pick it apart. Instead of Chrysler, it looks like
Chry-sler heavy on the "Chry".

Larry - the phase out of those motors had nothing to do with Daimler. Chrysler was already replacing the 5.2 with the 4.7, this happened BEFORE the merger. Replacing the 3.9 with the 3.7 was just doing the same thing with the six banger versions of those motors. Don't cry, both are good Chrysler designed engines.
