Subject: HELP... Motor and tranny swap

Ok ya'll i'm looking for some help on doin a motor and trans swap. I've got a 97 dakota that was a 5 speed. I've already got all the things i need to make it an auto matic. My problem is that the motor and trans i got are out of a 94 Ram. It's a 3.9 v6, same as the dakota, But automatic. About 3 years older automatic. It still works, i've just run into a few problems.

on the 97 wiring there are 7 wires that go into a plug on the tranny that i think control the overdrive and a couple other things. would I be able to find a wiring diagram of this somewere labeling wat each wire controls?

on my 94 tranny and wiring there is only 3 wires, and a 3 prong plug, that go to this same spot. Wat i'm doing is putting my 94 set up in my 97 dakota. and am wondering if I could get wiring diagrams of both trannys pin-pointing wat each wire controls. If there are 3 wires on the 97 that control the same areas as the 94, i want to splice them into my 3 prong plug, plug it up and go.

would i be able to get both wiring diagrams of both trannys some place on here??? If some one could help I would greatly appreciate it.

won't work

94 is a 42RH transmission while the 97 is a 42RE.

the later is electronic while the earlier is hydraulic.

The 94 obd1 computer will not control the RE
transmission

Take a look at redrider.us

They have setups for running the RH and said they
would soon have a setup to run the RE's in the
older trucks like trucks from the 70's

The reason is the gov presure is controled by
the comp in the RE the RH was hydrolic with just
a o/d and lockup sol they did not have the
presure sensor and sol for gov pressure

Or use an RH trans

Ok, I got it figured out. My 94 tranny will work with the 97 wires In my 97 dakota. All I needed was 3 of them that just so happen to have the same proceedings as a 94 but the 97 has more servos and as some of you said, is electric shift. but it will work.

Any way, www.atsg.com is a website that you can go to about getting ANY automatic trans specs that you need. you have to pay for the online books and the ones they ship you but it's one price for a downloadable and for one in the mail. It took me a while to find it but i ended up finding it on google by typeing in 42rh, 42re wiring diagrams. This was after a week of searching on the internet, through dealers, parts houses, the college here, and local buddies that own mechanic shops.

I figured out on this website that it breaks down the internal and external, wiring and hydraulic schematics of any transmission you desire to look at.

For those of you with 42RE transmissions or 42rh trannys, If you go to do a swap from a 96 - 01 to a 89 - 95 trans than it can be possible. think of this way how ever you want. If you need your truck back on the road and can't spend the money for a rebuild or for a different, but the same tranny. do this. I swear it'll work.

Atsg.com show's you that there are numbers on the engine wiring plug and on the trans plug. find the wires that you need, which are #'s 1, 6, and 7, off of the 97-01 wiring Splice them and connect them to the three plug wires on the 89-95. doing this ensures you got torque converter lockup, and overdrive. It also helps if you have the plug, with enough wire, on the older trans. I'm not real sure how some may feel about this, but i got it to work and i thank atsg.com and all the people on here that helped me too.
I'll stay posted
