Subject: Emissions Problem IP: Logged
Message: Hey everbody, old member from the Dakota list, just checking in with a question. I just failed the Illinois emmissions test on a 96, 3.9, 5-speed, 80,000mi. This is one of those treadmill tests with simulated driving conditions.
Looking at the output graph they give you, it looks like the emissions spike during acceleration, and at the shift points, then slowly drop off to acceptable during the cruise at speed portions of the test.
No trouble codes reported with the Check Engine light procedure, recent tune up (plugs, cap, roter, air filter...).
I have a suspicion as to the problem, but thought I'd get some collective opinions from the list.
Any thoughts?
Adam

Message: Have you replaced your PCV valve lately/ever?
Also, did it fail on the HC's, CO's, or NoX? Or on a combination of two/all? This is important in order to pinpoint what is going on in the system.

Message: PVC just replaced. I failed the CO and CO2 tests, not burning oil. Plugs indicated a little lean.
As I said, the graph shows spikes when the engine transitions from no-acceleration to acceleration, and at the shift points.
Based on that, I'll throw my guess out there and see if anybody agrees. My belief is that it's a worn timing chain. There's probabally enough slack in there that under high load (acceleration and re-engaging the clutch) the ECU isn't able to adjust the timing fast enough, and far enough. As the load comes off into normal cruise, the timing chain picks up some slack, and/or the ECU catch's up.
Any thoughts?

Message: Sounds like a valid point RTSE (and a possible cause as well). At 80K miles i'd be a little bit worried on the timing chains as well as the plenum gasket as that will cause lean conditions as well. (Plenum gasket life expenctancy: 30-45K miles.)
After changing it out (timing chain and/or plenum gasket), have the injectors cleaned...and not just the stuff in the tank either.

Message: Doesn't Illinois have a maximum dollar limit on repairs to fix emissions problems? If your truck is totally stock and all emissions hardware is intact, are you allowed 3 chances to pass the emissions test? Was your engine hot when the test was performed (did your Dakota sit for a long time before the emissions test was actually run)?

Message: I have a 03 dodge dakota stampede with 40,000
miles on it. Back in 2013 the engine light came on
and it was a part of the emmission that was
replaced. Since then it's none stop having to
replace parts of this system and since I live in
Calif, it has to be smogged every other year! This
whole thing started with bearly 38,000 miles on
the truck! Anyone else having this issue???
