Subject: Dakota 3.9 Slung Rod IP: Logged
Message: Today I took almost a 2 hr drive to Alabama, next to my state. Anywho, I turned to a store and soon as I did I heard something banging around. Stopped and checked the noise out and I could hear beating in the oil pan, unless its got a pulse now :)
So my poor Dakota sits out in the yard with a slung rod, where can I buy a reasonable rebuild kit for this?
Or is it cheaper to get another short block? I've actually seen these fairly decent with just block, rods, mains...etc.

Message: You could be better off getting the 'short block'.
The crank may be damaged/ ground badly as to prevent turning it down . Which if is the case
could be rather expensive to replace ? In addition to the rest of the rebuild required
unless you have access to good rates at a
machine shop ?

Message: You can find them from $1.200 on up
The boneyards up here start around $500 and go
up with the lower mileage motors
Just to give you an idea on prices

Message: I have found 318's rather cheap around here, is it possible to just put in a 318 with minor modifications?
Or is it too much of a headache?

Message: You don't say what year it is, but from your I.D. name I'm guessing its an 87, I don't think it would be a big problem to change over to a small block V8 the blocks are pretty close to begin with I don't know if the motor mounts are the same or not. If the transmission could hold up I would say go for it, I have done engine swaps before and some are easy, especially pick ups. I think the trans will bolt up to your 318 as well. You may have to use the torque converter for the V8 though.
Good Luck

Message: Well it's actually an 03. Only got 80k on the truck and already a slung rod. I've found the 318's to be much cheaper around here. How much trouble would it be to make it work?
I disconnected everything for the motor last night except for the transmission and fuel line, just because I had to get the disconnect tool I had forgot about needing that.
I would much rather go back with the 318 because I could really use the extra pulling power since I do haul a trailer around a bit.
What all would I need to make it fit? Mounts, harness, torque conv?

Message: I got a 92 dakota from a friend of mine yesterday that has 89k miles on it. I want to put the motor in it in my 03 since the truck was free and I have an 03 motor as well.
What would I need to do to put the motor in my 03? The only thing I noticed last night was that the intake was different? Any help would be greatly appreciated. The motor runs strong and purs like a kitten, just needs a pulley for the power steering. Which I'm sure would fit off my 03
