i have had a problem with my fuel gauge on my 1992 truck for some time and i am finally going to fix it. the dummy light works when it reaches empty... so have to assume the pump assembly works(in the tank) is there a common problem on the first and second generation dakotas. because my other dakota(yes, i have two of these hell-raisers 1992,1994)it also did the same thing a couple of times with the fuel guage bouncing snd not working but then snapped out of it? the sypmtons are sometimes it bounces a little and other times it dont work at all. i know its an electrical connection!!! but i also know there is someone on here with enought experience to say... yeah thats pin 43822 on the red plug over there and its a known problem. is this a dc signal that leaves the pump assembly... some reference i can use for tracking this down

The 'sender' "control" is inside the tank
with the fuel pump assembly .
Just like the volume control on a radio
it gets [ dirty ] and stops working on portions
or all of it.
Only way I know to fix is to replace.

sorry about the spelling before!!
is there a way to test the output of the sending unit to isolate the problem to the sending unit with out dropping the tank? so that i am confident its the culprit.

Unplug it and measure the resistance across the contacts when it's full, half full, etc.

Mine is getting bad if I run it down to 1/4 and
than fill it for some reason it will stay on 1/4
for about a week than finaly pop up

This ever sense I pulled a hemi truck out of the
ditch last winter with half a tank I had to jerk
hime some about a foot of slack in the chain
it went to empty and stayed there for 2 weeks

I am getting old and lazy so I just never run it
under half anymore LOL

They do ware and hang up and yes you can get a
voltage reading on sending wire to guage the only
way to fix it is to replace it

sometimes its just got a bad ground or conection
go to radio schack and get a can of contact
cleaner and unplg the plugs and spray it out good
be sure you either let it dry or blow out with
air befor pluging it back in

Yeah you probably need gas or you got your fuel sender stuck,
check your wire connection too. Maybe you pulled the wiring
harness too much when dropping the tank or installing it(I did it
before).
