Subject: Is Tranny in 2nd gear...after a few mins
IP: Logged

Message:
I've read other posts after thinking I had a transmission problem where my 2001 V6 appears to be in atleast 2nd gear after shortly warmed up from a start position then of course it changes into overdrive etc while accelerating. I've resorted to placing my shifter into 1st when starting from a light then resuming the position into Drive thereafter.

Other post(ers) here have led me to think I could have a few other areas of concern such as:

1. try the sensors first.
2. the rear sensors are usually the first to fail.
3. pressure sensor and sol(enoid) going bad.

Is this a good start for me or? I recently had the Trans Fluid replaced aswell as the filter plus a new Tranny Pan (which was almost rotted in one spot).

I did have some codes but the Trans shop mechanic didn't quite state what it was. He said something along the lines as my Exhaust being clogged and that he'd recommend starting to replace the Cat Converter.

Suggestions much appreciated! Thanks Rog.

Roger, you need to find out what those codes are. there is no code for a "clogged exhaust". you can read the codes yourself and post back here. to get the codes, turn the key on/off/on/off/on and the codes will display in the odometer as PXXXX and after all codes are displayed the Pdone will display.

as mentioned earlier post back here with the codes you get and we can go from there. if you do need a trans shop, i suggest finding a different one than the one that suggested a "clogged exhaust".

that code doesn't indicate anything coming from the tranny. if it's been a while since you've serviced the tranny, you should see about getting that done first before you start throwing parts at it.

you may want to save this web address in your favorites:

http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/index.php

P0442 OBD-II Trouble Code
Technical DescriptionEvaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)

What does that mean? This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

Symptoms: You likely won't notice any drivability problems.

Causes: A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

* A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
* A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
* A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
Other small leak in EVAP system
* Faulty vent o-ring seal
Possible Solutions: With a P0442, the most common repair is to:

Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

How was tranny before you got this shop to change the fluid ?
Dodge tranny needs ATF-4
NOT Dexron -- if this is what he put in
tranny will be slow at shifting and all sort of
associated problems..

LOL...I'm actually not sure what type of fluid they put in it! That I will have to find out.

I did the A500 Transmission Filter, Tranny Pan and Black Smart Blend Friction Modifier plus Fluid change back in April 10th, 2008.

Also, no the truck didn't do what it is doing now before the change!

Thanks for the posts so far guys. +++++

UPDATE...ok yes the Tranny Shop put in DEXRON 3 with a LUBE Guard Friction 3 Modifier

(that apparently mods the oil to an ATF-4 and supplies a better slick) <--- as stated by the person I just spoke to on the phone.

So...hmmm should I dump this out and do a change with ATF-4...my gut says so!

my gut says since you already paid for the trans service to be done properly, and it wasn't done properly, i would make them do it at no charge. unless you think they'll screw it up again, then it may be a good idea to do it yourself.

and by the way, on additives, my philosophy is don't use them. a quality product should not need any extra additives, with one exception. friction modifier for an LSD rear end.

Update: Tranny is running smooth again as I was in the shop a few days ago...Here's what did it!

$557.69

Governor Solenoid $121.63 Cdn
Pressure Sensor $126.90 Cdn
Fluid $ 55.00 Cdn
Additive $ 20.00 Cdn
Labour $170.00 Cdn
-----------------------------
Total $557.69 Cdn

All in all...the job was relatively cheap since I was budgeting for a thousand dollars thinking it was something more involving the inards of the transmission parts. After reading these forums and being suspicious of the solenoids it was confirmed as to being just that!

Thanks alot for these forums guys...
I also just drove about 600kms on a mini-trip and got in last-night...my transmission shifts 100% and feels tighter now especially when shifting into reverse where a clunk used to always happen!

Rockin Rog, I would say you found a good transmission shop I would keep them in mind if you ever need some transmission help again. A lot of places will tell you the trans needs to be rebuilt, when its only the control valves.
Good Luck

friction modifyer should not be used

When the trans is not droping into low its usualy
the rear band servo hanging up the A 500 and the
518 a lot of these after the band is adjusted will
act this way and you need to manualy drop it into
low after a few times they work ok I know it
sounds strange but I have had this happen many
times

Get that crap out and use good fluid these
transmissions are very sensitive to the fluid

Amsoil universal syn
Redline syn
ATF +4

The valvoline +4 is the cheapest in price also
the +3 was a blend of syn and reg the +4 is a full
synthetic I also am using the +4 in the old
904 727 chrysler recomends it for all there
transmissions now the older trans were not as
sensitive to fluid

If this is the only problem all other shifts ok
I would say your sensor and sol are ok

First thing I would do is change the fluid and
filter and use the right fluid

Any one who tells you your cat is pluged when you
have a evap code I would not let anywhere near
my truck

The only way you can convert the dextron to +4
is by using the lube gaurd black and it does not
have any friction modifier in it thats a no no

The only additives we use at the shop is the
lubguard red for sticky valves and the mr moly

smrtrans ships there transmissions with 4 bottles
of the moly and recomend a good synthetic actualy
they recomend Amsoil or redline or the +4 if
you do not use these fluids the gurantee is void
these guys know what they are talking about
there workhorse trans can handle 600hp and is
guranteed for 2 years

most are 12 months 12,000 miles they are 2 years
24,000 miles

We install a lot of there transmissions mostly
behind the super charged trucks we have found
there transmissions to be virtualy bullet
proof

They are custom buit 1 at a time specificly for
your set up and gear ratio in my opinion they
are the best out there

smrtrans.com call and talk to Pat hes a cool guy
and knows his mopar transmissions better than
anyone I have ever talked to

Hey, now I feel sort of like I spent money for nothing...Well not really but in a sense I'd have loved to have tried the oil recommendation you suggested J&J.

Actually I did attempt to request the oil job but was referred to do what was eventually done. I'm running at 100% now though and haven't saw a code light yet on the dash. I'll hold my breath for awhile now but will definately print this thread for future advice!

On a side note...is AMSOIL a US only product cause I've never saw\heard this product up here in Ontario/Canada?

Amsoil will ship to canada they are located
in superior wisconsin

Also in canada the moly additive is called
moly slip US mrmoly

Like I said a lot of times when the band is
addjusted for some reason they hang up but
shifting manualy into low when you come to a stop
a few times than they begain to work

The old 904 727 never did that but both the
500 and 518 do its a weired one
