Subject: Dakota rear end... IP: Logged
Message: Hello all,
I have a friends '99 V6 Dakota and it needs a new rear end. I am a GM guy and not privy to the newer Chrysler drive-trains. All I need to know is what the rear end is and what other applications/vehicles it was used in. I plan on just taking one out of a yard and throwin it in there. If any of you could tell me or give me another good source of information I would greatly appreciate it, thanks in advance!

Message: Most likely a 8.25 rear, the v8s had 9.25 rears.
Gearing could be 3.23, 3.55, 3.92's. And it could be a factory LSD (limited Slip Diff). the brakes are most likely 9.5inch, but could be 11 inch.
The gear ratio should be on a sticker in the glove box. Now is a good time to upgrade from the 'yard' to a 9.25 rear w 3.92's & LSD.

Hope that helps you.

Message: While not all v8 Dakotas got the 9.25, it should not be considered just an R/T rear. It came on most gen 3 v8 trucks. The common exception is the all wheel drive v8's - they usually got the 8.25, as torque is split between the front and rear diffs.

Message: And try to find a 4.10 Dakota rear in a boneyard. Scarcer than hen's teeth, this wasn't a factory option.

Message: how important is it to change the diff?
what would be the case if i just changed the gear ratio? my tires dont peel out off the line inless i put my foot on the gas and brake and i guess load up the suspension or drive train? then it will pel out off of the launch? but my truck breaks concrete while going into second often? i had a shop build me a trans with a shift kit and they also drilled some kinda hole for a bypass for the over drive unit does this sound familiar? they did a great job and changer me $1695 but if i just changed my gears and not the dif is there a problem? i just dont want to change the ratio and cause one tire to peel out all the time that doesnt get you down the street any faster!
