Subject: New motor wont start!
IP: Logged

Message:
I just put a new 3.9 in my 01 dakota. I followed they haynes manual the best i could when installed the distrubitor and it still wont start. ive tried moving in 180 degrees, recheck my connections, etc. I know its getting fuel because the spark plugs are getting wet. Im losing my patience with this thing! any help would be appreciated, and if your in the connnecticut area, i'd pay you to come help!

it could be a number of things. first thing is to check for any codes. even it it hasn't started there could be stored codes you need to look into. as far as the distributor you need to turn the engine to TDC on the compression stroke for #1 cylinder then check to see that the rotor is lined up with the #1 plug wire terminal. you could have the injector sync way out by turning that distributor like that.

also, go over all your connections in the harness. check for any broken wires or loose grounds.

sorry but connecticut is a little too far awat from cajunland for me to be of any more help.

how can i make sure that its TDC on the compression stroke? i tried using a screw in type compression gauge but i dont think it worked correctly because i would here the air hiss out the gauge and the needle bounce. is there another trick to it?

when the gage connection starts hissing it's on the compression stroke. then you need to watch for the timing mark on the balancer to line up with the 0 mark on the timing chain cover. turning the engine by hand while doing this.

better yet simply use a thumb!
or finger

get a buddy to put a thumb or finger tight over the spark plug hole while your turning the crank with a socket and breaker bar or ratchet

when it starts coming up on compression
he wont be able to hold his finger on the hole
and you'll hear the hissing

then line up your marks

don't forget to set that fuel injector syn
or you'll get no where

I think the fuel sync is the problem as ive tried quite a few times doing what is posted above. I noticed the italics in the haynes manual mentioning that if the crankshaft had been moved with the distributer removed that the fuel sync would have to be reset. is this something i can do myself, and can you shed more light on the fuel sync purpose. This is the newest vehicle ive worked and so needless to say theres even more computer **** in it.

wow, very helpful. I dont need it to tow trailers so the v6 is plenty for me. a v8 is a waste of gas these days if you can live with out it. any knowledge on the fuel sync deal would be more helpful than opinions on engine performance
thanks!

if you follow the procedure that i posted above the fuel sync will be close to get the truck running. if it didn't work there is another problem somewhere else. have you checked for codes?

Have you managed to check in any way that it is
giving a spark ?
If you have a 'timing light' , you would be able to verify that one way or other.
The 'timing' of the spark is set by the
"pickup sensor" in the flywheel housing
{ looking at engine - it is at about the eleven
oclock position } = make sure the wiring is connected to it..

someone else built this motor for you. With the knowledge that you show here, you don't have a clue. Are you sure that you are not trying to put a briggs and stratton in there?? Maybe one day you will get it, but i doubt it. Go over to Kowalski's place, he don't know how to turn a wrench either.

Best of luck.

I Hope, judging by your response here as well as on other posts and lack of helpful insight in how to proceed with possible repairs, i doubt that you have much "wrench" turning experience yourself.

wow, yea some pleasant people with too much free time i see. I bought this motor from a junkyard. Ive been doing my own car repair for 8 years, since ive been able to drive. My current driver, 99 pontiac sunfire i replaced the motor after doing the head gasket on the first motor. The machined heads put too much stress on the bottom end and i put a rod out the block.

as for this truck i pulled the old motor in about 6 hours and if it wasnt for this ignition issue i would have put the new one in about the same time.

as for the helpful posts thanks. i appreciate it. i did swap the pickup sensor on the tranny housing when i put the new motor in. Friday i have off so i'll be rechecking all my wiring, then starting fresh with the distributor placement. I do have a timing light and will check for spark as well. ill let ya'll know how it comes out

on the plate under the distributer there is a mark for cylinder number 1. the times ive tried before ive point the sparking end of the rotor at that mark. if you use aim, you can talk to me more directly ( defiantcowboy83 ).

ok first you have got to get the dist. dropped in on #1 and compression stroke

i mentioned the thumb
or finger method above
once youve got that
turn the dist housing so that when looking str8 down over the rotor the Cyl line on the left and the rotor blade coming from the right should just start to touch the CYL line

if everything else is done right and no other problems that motor should start

if it doesnt run through what we call the ABCs
Air, Fuel, Spark

sounds good, i had a feeling that may be part of my problem , when i was lining up the distributor, i was centering it over the mark, had a feeling that wasnt right.

Did I, no nerve hit here. we just don't need all you're irrational babble. if you can't post anything positive or helpful you might as well waster some other sites bandwidth with your dribble. maybe you could understand www.sesamestreet.com. i believe that site fits your intellect more than this site.

furthermore, i don't need to impersonate anyone on here and those you listed(with the exception of maybe sts) have no reason, nor would they even attempt to impersonate me.
