 Subject: Fuel pump filter problems 1992

Hi There I need some help. I have a 92 dakota sport v6. It wont start. I believe it is getting a spark but no fuel. When my boyfriend sprayed that eyther stuff or whatever its called it starts but when I push the gas nothing and it dies. He thinks that it is the fuel pump or filter, which I believe is in the gas tank. I need the truck running by Monday. How do we know if it is just the filter or the pump. I have some instructions on changing the filter but it required dropping the tank and draining the fuel. Has anyone done this before? Is this something we can do in the driveway? I live in the country and can't afford a tow to the garage.

Ok I should add that it cranks over but does not start. What are the first steps of elimination to find out if it is fuel pump/filter related or something else. Was running fine one day than the next would not start. The gas gage has not worked for a few months, and I often stall if I brake hard on a corner.

Possible fuel pump bad , but more probable may well be fuel pump relay , or the splice in the wiring harness -about 6 to 8 inches into the harness under the fuse/relay box - drivers side
underhood on fenderwall.
When you just turn key to on - should hear
fuel pump 'whirr' for a few seconds .
Also - could be something in harness closer to
top of fuel tank .
Note - instaed of dropping tank - it is possible to undo the bolts and lift the box .
Just be careful going under it if you don't lift it entirely away.

Yesterday I tried to hear the "whirr' of the pump when I turned the key, but nothing. My husband is going to change the filters tomorrow. He works really long hours, so can I check the splice myself, with very little mechanical experience? Can I do this without electrocuting myself? Or should I wait for him to get home. Thanks. I'm in a panic since I start a new job on Monday and need this beater working again. Thanks again.

Did he find anything ?
Filters would help , no doubt , but - not the
main problem . By now , he has probably found the connectors on top of the tank ( for the pump ).
If they were ok then point him to the above post
re the 'splice' in the harness .
And note that it may look ok , but is probably not..

fuel filter is part of the pump assembly
have your boyfriend just put his ear down at ground level near the tank
and you turn the key all the way forward
no sound no fuel!
next i would check that wire splice before doing a pump replacement as the wire splice will also stop the pump from working

In 1992, the fuel filter was NOT part of the pump. It's mounted inside the left frame rail and is easily replaced.

All this screwing around
just get some wire and any 12 volt light bulb
ground 1 side other side to fuel pump wires
When key is turned on it will light a few secs
but must stay on when cranking
If the power is there
Replace the pump and be done with it
Get a master comes with new guage sender
But you also said gas guage does not work that
would tell me there is a bad ground on the pump
that needs to be checked first before you buy
any parts test power and ground
