Message: Kyle, mine is an 88 and it has a throttle body fuel injection, so if the 89 has a carb. either someone has changed it or its a throttle body and they do look somewhat alike, so it could be mistaken for a carb.
Another thing to think about is do you have to have it smog checked? If so, I doubt it would pass with a carb.
Good Luck

Message: I would say he made a little mistake there and it
is a throttle body injection
I have many customers with the older 88 to 91 Daks
with the throttle body and they just keep going
and going
I guy is just about to roll over 300,000 and never
did any engine work the only thing he ever replaced was the wires, plugs cap rotor and the
egr and o2 sensor, it is using 1qt of oil in 3000
miles its the valve seals but he will not replace
them
He did 1 night half drunk try to pull a semi out
of the ditch and a week later his trans quit
shifting an automatic LOL he did get the semi out
though there was no ice or snow on the road
We put a rebuilt trans from michigan automatics in
about 5 years ago and last year he bought 4 new
white spoke wheels and we put them on with a new
set of tires
He uses the truck every day and in winter I always
see him out on the lakes with it fishing he loves
to fish, he also carries 4 tire chains with him
at all times man does that thing go trough the
snow with chains on all the tires, He's a nut
Another thing about the gen 1 trucks the bodies
seam to hold up very well better than the G2 and 3
trucks for some reason I do not know
Also all these guys with the TB 4x4's are getting
20mpg or better with them.
at 124,000 it still has a lot of life left and its
worth buying, take care of it with reg oil changes
and you will enjoy it for many years
They are great little trucks
I have about 8 guys with the 86,87 carbed trucks
2 of those have the 4bl and they are also still
running well all with way over 100,000 on them
In 1988 the motors were changed and they have
roller lifters from 88 up the block is the same
as the newer mag engine blocks just a dif cam
you can bolt the newer mag heads and intake right
on them or vise versa
I have one we went the other way with we did a
valve job on the heads and bolted the heads and
intake from an 88 onto a 99 motor and with the
hotter cam it runs real nice with the throttle
body heads and intake, it has a lot more power
Rust free I would grab it before its gone
very dependible little trucks so much so the
trucks are old but these guys do not want to part
with them for that reason
