Message: My Dakota has a problem that has limits my trips on a local basis only. It starts up fine and it runs fine, doesn't overheat but it will "stumble" at various speeds. It will backfire, lose power but can run if placed in neutral. Sometimes it will stall out when stopping at intersections and 80 per cent of the time it will restart and run fine as long as it is neutral and the rpm is up to 1200, the other 20 per cent of the time it will start after 30 minutes; this does not happen everytime it is driven. The catalytic converter has been replaced twice as the backfiring has destroyed it, currently the insides of the catalytic converter have been gutted out.
I have replaced the fuel pump, powertrain control module,TPS,MAP,Intake Air Temp sensor,Engine Coolant Temp sensor,Crankshaft Position Sensor,Camshaft Position Sensor, IAC, sparkplugs, plug wires, ignition coil, distributor cap, rotor and battery.
The only code that shows up is 12, which according to my Haynes book is, "Battery disconnected to the PCM".
I have taken it to the dealer but they are no help.

Message: Heres what you need to do
have a plug wrench with you and next time it dies
pull a plug and check
wet losing spark
dry losing fuel
You need to find out if its fuel or electrical
than you can begain to elimanate things
clean all grounds and connectors first it may just
be an intemitant connection at a plug
engine comp ground brhind alt
engine to chassie strap rear of motor to fire
wall
the comp controled dodges switch grounds on/off
not power and a bad ground can cause all sorts
of misleading symtoms
on the plugs diconect 1 at a time spray out with
carb or brake clean let dry for 15min and plug
back togather
another thing to check is computer pin
#3 and #9
1 should have power all the time 1 on/off with
key
have a volt meter handy to check when it stalls
just use a long stick pin to back probe the
pin no need to unplug to check also clean the
comp plug only do not spray the computer it
will eat the epoxy
go from there and you will track it down
it could also be as simple as the asd or fuel pump
relay
in the power dist box under hood all relays are
the same 30 amp get 1 new one and swap each out
with the new one if no change put old one back
and try another they go have mecanical points
inside that do go bad

Message: Thanks for the help,I will follow these procedures and keep you posted.
I forgot to mention that the truck has 183,647 miles, it is due for a new timing chain and sprockets?
Do I need to replace the upper and lower sprockets?
Thanks.

Message: I had the truck idling in the driveway after replacing the O2 sensor hoping the computer would adjust to the sensor. The truck was idling fine but died, I pulled a spark plug which came up dry. The truck started up without a problem but died after a few more minutes again showing a dry spark plug.
