Subject: Engine almost chokes IP: Logged
Message: Hi all.
I have a 01 dakota v6 and when I hit the gas from a dead stop or very slow speed and let up on it real quick, the engine seems like it is a bit starved for gas and almost dies but never does. It also does the same thing when reversing and has died a few times in reverse. I thought it might be the fule filter and so did a mechenic, but i have found out that there is no fuel filter. Does anyone have any ideas what it coud be? I am selling it and want to fix that.
Thanks in advance

Message: 104000 miles. So I guess I need to drop the tank to replace it. It couldn't be an easy fix

Message: Drop the tank or it might be a lot easier to remove the bed to get at the fuel pump from the top of the tank. You might need a few helpers to manuever the bed around though.

Message: I haven't had the codes checked. It runs fine as long as I don't hit the gas and then let of on it. Last night I was backing out of some sand and it sounded starved everytime I hit the gas. I was trying to go over a lump of sand so I wasn't appling constant pressure to the peddal. PS. What is TB? Is that timing belt?
I am not much of a mechanic but can probably replace a sensor.

Message: TB is the Throttle Body which is under the air intake hat and mounted on top of the intake. The TPS is on the driver's side of the TB. The Idle Air Control sensor is on the back side of the TB facing the firewall. If you replcace it try not to touch the pintle end or you will ruin the sensor. Torx screws hold the sensors in place and they can be remooved without removing the TB but it's easier if you remove the TB from the manifold plus it gives a chance to clean the TB. Use a new TB gasket when reinstalling. If it idles OK I would suspect the TPS sensor first. I had problems with my own TPS when I put on a V8 TB. Truck did not run right at all and the throttle was not acting right, something like what you have experienced. I had to get another V8 TB for it to work right.
In your 2001 you can turn the ignition on then off, on then off, on then off, on and leave on and any trouble codes stored will display in the odometer. Ignition "on" means the key is turned to the "run" position and the warning lights are on in the dash. If you get any codes you can post here to find out what they mean, there are several posts with all the codes listed. You can search the site at http://mark.dodgedakotas.com.
Trouble codes will help a lot in finding out what is wrong with your truck. I have a 2001 3.9 also and I also have the Dodge Service Manual for it so if you need help post here.

Message: You can try and clean the IAC just spray it clean
with carb clean also the hole it goes in sometimes
they just get a carbon buildup and do not react
quick enough
As you depress the gas the IAC lifts off the seat
and when you let off to idle it slowly goes back
untill idle speed is reached
idle air control
Like the old carbs had either a vac pot or elect
sol to hold idle up for a few secs after letting
off, same priciple
do not pull push or twist on the IAC plugher when
you reinstal put a little oil on the o-ring
It will seam like they are real tight when you
take them off its just what happens to steel
threaded into alm after a few years
so do not tighten the crap out of them when you
put them back on
The TPS drivers side you can not do anything with
except replace it
TPS $15 to $20
what happens here is when it is snaped back to the
closed position they will temp read a lower volt
than it should idle will drop and than pick back
up
IAC $35 to $40 get this from chrysler we had a lot
of trouble with a lot of them from the parts
stores
After you replace this one if you do it will not
idle right you will need to start shut off, start
shut off 3 or 4 times than it will learn the
right position to be in
Another symptom of the TPS or IAC being bad is
when you shift into rev or even drive sometimes
it will idle low or even quit
From what you are describing here its one or both
I would try the TPS firs its cheaper if that don't
solve it than replace the IAC
If you had a scanner you could watch both the
TPS volts and IAC steps
You can check the TPS with a digital volt meter
key on engine off
closed anywhere from .4 to .7 open to WOT wide
open throttle should have a full 3 volt change
if say .5 closed should be 3.5 or higher at WOT
and as you open the throttle a steady increase
no jumping
It should always return to the same low volts,
now let the throttle snap shut and see if it reads
lower than what it was reading doing it slow
Alos if it reads above 4.8 at WOT it will trip
a code
If it does not have a full 3 volt change I would
replace it you need that range for it to work
properly a little more is good but no less than 3
center wire on TPS + red wire on meter
black wire on meter or - to a good ground I
usualy go right on the neg batt cable to check
the TPS you may need a long stick pin or sowing
needle and just push it in from the back side
into the plug, dont stick it threw the wire
Needs to be on the TB and pluged in to check it
key on engine not running
Another sign of a bad IAC is the motor does not
rev when started it should rev up every time
A good working IAC will rev from 1200rpm to
2000rpm mine goes 1800 everytime it works well
They are

Message: I did the code check and all it said was P done. I assume that it is not detecting a problem. I will try the clean out and voltage test. Now just to be clear, my problem is only when I am in first gear or reverse and only when I push the gas and let off of it all the way or slightly.
Thanks again for the help.

Message: I finanlly got around to working on the truck. I was at autozone getting some fule injector cleaner and the associate there siad I could try and clean the throttle body. I bought some throttle body cleaner, took of the air intake over the TB and sprayed it, let it sit for a couple minutes and wiped it off with a rag. It seems to be ok now. Such a simple fix.
Thank you all for the help?
Larry, is the IAC you were talking about clean another name for the Throttle Body. It sounds as if what I did was what you were saying to do.

Message: The iac is on the back of the throttle body and sometimes starts to work properly after spraying down the throttle body. Though sometimes u need to remove it to clean it since the tip of the plunger can get gunked up at that point it wont matter how much throttle body cleaner u spray.
