Subject: Gear oil for NV 3500 IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 CC, 91,000 miles with a NV 3500 5 speed manual transmission and a non-LSD rear end. Per my Dodge service manual, both parts call for Mopar Synthetic 75W-90 synthetic gear oil. The Mopar lube is expensive from the dealer, about $15 a quart and I need 5 1/2 quarts for both jobs. Plus the dealer is a long drive from my office and my home, which means more gas expense.
I can get the Valvoline Sythethetic 75W-90 gear oil at Napa just a few blocks away, and the price is $11.99 per quart. How does the Valvoline lube compare to the OEM Mopar lube? According to Ma Mopar there must be some secret ingredient in the Mopar lube, they state in the FSM their lube is the ONLY lube to be used in the NV3500. I'd like to use the Valvoline if I can, but I sure don't want problems any with my transmission or differential. I used the Mopar lube last time but the Dodge dealer where I bought it has closed his doors. It's a shame too because they had a great parts staff and were also just a few blocks away from my office.
I am not so well versed with gear lube so any info is very much appreciated.
Thanks.

Message: Problem Child's answer is correct if you don't want to buy the (same) fluid from Mopar. The NV3500 does not take 75W gear oil. Either get the oil from the Dodge dealer, or get Pennzoil Syncromesh. I'm sure Redline or Amsoil have their equivalent as well.
The axle can take any 75W-90 GL5 gear oil. Dinosaur or synthetic - it's your call. Since you don't have the LSD axle you don't need to add friction modifier.

Message: Sorry. I am wrong about the lube. But last January I paid a transmission shop to drain and refill the transmission. That guy said it took synchromesh too and when I got it back the transmission was very hard to shift. Felt like it was full of mud and was really hard to shift the first 3 gears. I went to the Dodge dealer and bought 5 quarts of Mopar manual transmission lube it is part #4874464. I drained the synchromesh out and refilled with the Mopar lube and had no problems with the transmission after that. It only took 2 quarts and I returned the other 3. I still have the receipts. I also drained and refilled the differential with Mopar fluid that day too. The part # for the rear diff lube is 5010320-AA. Both lube part #'s have the # 1081090 next to the part description, which made me think that both parts took the same lube. Now that I see there are different part #'s I know I am wrong. #1081090 must be a code for lubricants or oil at the dealership.
The Napa website says they carry Pennzoil Synchromesh for $6.59 a quart, a lot better than $15 and just down the street. I sure don't want to ruin my transmission putting the wrong oil in it. But if the Mopar lube is synchromesh, I don't remember it saying so on the bottle. And the synchromesh the transmission guy used had to have been the wrong viscosity or something else for it to shift so badly.
Are there any advantages to using synthetic 75w-90 in the rear differential? The Valvoline 75w-90 conventional is half the price of synthetic.
Thanks for you guys setting me straight on this. I wasn't trying to be a smart a$$.

Message: Synthetic won't break down from the heat as fast as organic oil will. You can go longer between changes. I change the oil every 12K miles, so organic is fine for me (and my wallet).
Towing generates a lot of heat. So if you don't tow much and you change regularly and often organic is a suitable choice.

Message: Thanks Modain. I don't do any towing or heavy hauling with my truck. Napa is the only place around here I can find 75w90 gear oil, it's Valvoline for about $6.50 a quart. Walmart has some off-brand 75w90 for about $5.00 but I won't use it in my truck.
I'll get the Pennzoil Synchromesh and the Valvoline conventional gear oil and be done with this. I'll change the rear end oil every 12K now too. I thought it could go a lot longer with the synthetic Mopar gear oil.
The Mopar Manual Transmission lube I have now has about 30K on it. How many miles can you safely run the Pennzoil Synchromesh?
Thanks.

Message: Thats strage you say the trans takes 75w90 all
the 3500 we change we use Amsoil universal trans
fluid in them
The secret in there lube is moly
the rear either 80w90 or 75w90 will work if posi
you will need to use a tube of lube for that
If you use cheap fluid you will need to go to
mrmoly.com and get a tube of moly to add to it
or it will shift hard
A lot of the rear fluids say they have the posi
additive already in the fluid, don't trust that
get a tube from mopar and put it in
usung a fluid without the additive the clutches
for the posi unit will be shot in 20,000 miles
it has to be in there with a posi that uses the
clutch setup
I seen so many ruin there posi's in the old
muscle cars by not using the additive than I had
to put a clutch kit in the rears with the labor
it gets rather pricy and could have been avoided
with a $15 tube of the additive
same with the GM posi's no lube posi don't
last long its gone
do it right and save yourself a lot of headaches
down the road
I run the moly in all the automatics I work on
the A500 gets 2 the A518 gets 3 tubes of the
moly additive 10%
GM, Ford or Chrysler they all get the moly in the
automatics when the fluid is changed and all the
customers make coments on haw smoth and how well
there automatics work
Its The Moly not me

Message: Thanks Larry. I have an open non-LSD rear differential so I should not need any additive. I was planning on using Valvoline 75w90 conventional and changing it every 12,000 miles. The OE lube costs too much.
Pennzoil says their Synchromesh manual trans fluid is the same as Mopar manual lube and is made for Chrylser manuals that take Mopar lube part #4874464. That's the Mopar lube for my transmission. Do you know if the Pennzoil will work OK or should I just bite the bullet and get the lube from the dealer? Dealer charges $15.00 a quart and I need 2 1/2 qts for the job.
Thanks for your help.

5W-30 Synchromesh for trans, some quality syn for the rear, change trans every 50,000 miles, rear every 100,000 miles with a good syn.
But who am I, Synchromesh isn't what your trans needs.
It's your dollar, spend it anyway you like.
