Subject: 92 V6 cold start problems IP: Logged
Message: Engine has been doing great until the last few weeks. I have changed the fuel cap, distributor and rotor, ignition wires, fuel filter and spark plugs. New starter and supporting wiring to and from battery. Battery has lots of juice, cranks no problem
Right now, when cold, I crank and it usually doesn't fire. Turn off and try again and it starts. Idles ok.
However, for the first minute or two, it just will not develop any power to move. Will not accelerate and wants to stall/buck.
A bit of warm up time and runs just fine.
Not sure which sensor/part to check that is tied to the cold running.
Have also considered the fuel pump but since it runs great after it has warmed up a bit, not sure if this is the problem.
No problem restarting and running once the motor is warm - at least so far :-)
So I really feel that it is tied to whatever parts are involved in the cold start.
92 V6 Magnum with a V8 throttle body. Otherwise, stock. K&N air filter which is clean.
The butterflies on the throttle body have a bit of carbon around if that helps diagnose.
All help appreciated.

Message: This could be the engine temp sensor-NOT the sender for the gauge.
This tells the ECU the engine temp and it adjusts A/F mixture.
It is located in the front of the intake manifold near the left corner. You will probably have to move an a/c bracket out of the way and look under a wire loom.

Message: Well, the condition has changed a little.
Still it starts after one or two cranks. Idles decent but loopes/hesitates when the throttle is slightly opened to get moving. This usually goes away after it has warmed up a bit.
Yesterday, it did the same thing when the engine was hot.
You step on the accelerator but it just stays there or bucks/hesitates. So I assume there is air going in but no fuel.
Are fuel pumps a common fix in these trucks?
Do the Fuel pressure reg go bad often?
How about the sensors? Any chance the sensors on the TB could be at fault?
No problem codes flashed up. I swapped the ASD relay with other working relays in the fuse box with no improvement.

Message: Did you check/replace the ECU temp sensor?
This will cause the exact symptoms you are describing. The ECU doesn't know the engine temp so it doesn't know how to make adjustments.

Message: check the TPS throttle position sensor
try starting it with the gas depresed slightly
and see what happens
center wire + and ground -
turn key on do not start check volts
.4 to .7 open and close throttle and it should
always return to same low volts and as it opens
go up steady no glitches
A 3 volt change is normal do not think its bad
if it does not go 4.8 5 volt they should have a
full 3 volt increase maybe a little more but no
less than 3 so closed .7 WOT wide open throttle
would be 3.7 volt
when you say it runs funny when gas is lightly
pushed that is the TPS
What happens is the IAC idle air control is not
in the right location for start it should rev
when started any time hot or cold and than settle
down to idle
It may also be the IAC itself sticking at idle
position when key is shut of the IAC should back
out about 50 steps
remove spray of with carb clean and hole a little
oil on oring and reinstal
TPS drivers side of throttle body
IAC rear of TB
check these things if it starts right with
throttle pressed down it is one of these
It does not read the temp sensors when cranking
to start only after its running
