1990 Dodge Dakota, stalled out and will not start. Engine cranks but no spark from coil. When key turned to run there is only a small click from the gas pump and the pump does not prime. Looked for bad wiring or bad fusible link. Found a bad fusible link, one end with two red wires one of which had a white stripe and the other end was a white wire. Tried reconnecting fusible link wire and it cut all power completely. Take the wire apart and all power is back and engine cranks but no starting. Any ideas? Thanks!

Go under the hood
on the drivers side inner fender well
there is a Black fuse/relay box
remove it
un-do the tape holding the wire splice together
now what you are looking for is a splice
of 3 or 4 wires (red/white if i remember correctly)
the splice either breaks or gets cruded up
cut the splice out and re-do it
90% of the time it is the problem you have described

I found out the large ground wire was not attached, just a small one from the neg battery terminal directly to the body. Funny, it seems I've been driving it like that since I got it. Anyway, I reconnected the large ground wire to the engine, still not starting. Reconnected the broken fusible link and all of a sudden there was power to the relay, turned the key and the pump primed, turned it over and voila, she goes, hallelujah! Decided to run into town and get some oil for the chainsaw to start getting some firewood in and a mile down the road, "POOF" she cut out, no power at all, no dash lights, electric windows don't work, pump doesn't prime, and now the starter won't crank. Poop! Funny thing is it seemed to be running better than before all this happened but cut out again. Will look for the infamous splice but does the 1990 model have the same configuration??? Oh well, it was fixed for a few hours, ha ha ha! Thank for the help and suggestions, keep em coming.

Ok, I think it was the fusible link again. I guess the wire is weak. I swapped relays and the power was back and I could hear the pump priming. I then switched them back and still had power but it wouldn't start. Checked the fusible link and it looked like it was still connected where I had cut off the rubber and reconnected it and there was power there so I was stumped. Turns out the wire had broken in another place under the plastic insulation. After reconnecting I was good to go again. I'm going to just swap the link for a new one and hopefully that will solve the problem. Thanks for the help and advice!

What I would do is get a fuse holder and If its
the link I am thinking its either 60 or 100 amp
carrie some extra fuses with you
but start looking for a bad short someware that
should not keep happing
