Uh... Has it ever run that you've heard?

I had an old pickup that did about the same. Cough, sputter, -almost- start, sounded like it wanted to start. Never started.

Ran a compression check. Problem: Rings shot, valves shot, headgasket blown.

Solution: $1500 rebuild :0/

I'd run a compression check on it first thing, just to eliminate that possibility.

Well, I'd still do a compression check on it.

Also, check the fuel filter, maybe it's clogged. Could be water in the gas as well, pour a splash into the carb directly and try starting. Not to much, no need to flood it. :0)

If it starts then dies after you do that, it's something to do with the fuel delivery system.

Just some advice on if the fuel tank is watered...do not buy a box of HEAT and start pouring it into the fuel tank like a friend of mine did.

Truck was an S-10 and he was always bragging about how fast it was. So one day it just stopped running. It would start, cough spatter and die. My friend thought for sure someone dumped either water in his tank or bad gas. So he heads to AutoZone and buys 20 bottles of HEAT. Starts pouring this crap into his tank, lets it sit for a day and tried to start the truck again. The truck started, ran a few minutes and started to cough, choke and died.

This went on for days...the same routine. The truck still won't run and is still sitting in his driveway.

Moral of the story, don't brag about how fast your truck is, unless it is really really fast.

don't spend big bucks yet I found an 88 dakota with tbi in the same condition. If you have an efi v6, then this applys. my friend owned it and it stopped running and he parked it for six months. he gave up trying to fix it after 4 mechanics were stumped. I bought it for two fifty and went straight to the fuel pressure regulator which had a pin hole in the diaphram and filthy which meant the injectors needed to be cleaned and the throttle body taken apart and also cleaned. the ports were clogged with carbon.
that was one part. The second, you can simply check your fuel pump is working by unplugging your fuel hose and see if fuel comes out by turning the key to start briefly. do get a new feul pressure regulator about 45 - 100 bucks depends where you go. now a way to check if it's your injectors and ecu, get a cup with gas in it and pour a bit into your trottle body. if your getting spark it will start and then shut off. now if you can have a friend start it while you pour a bit of gas continuously down tbi it should stay on (idleing rough of course) but you'll know your getting spark. next check your timing. pullout plug number 1 and put a piece of rag and tap the ignition in short spurts with the key. when piston 1 reaches Top dead center, the rag will pop out. you now can check your rotor and make sure it is in line with no 1 or the back of your rotor should be aiming toward cylinder one. put the plug back in. or another way is your rotor has a small black plug on it and it should be in the rear of the rotor if your standing in front of your vehicle ( assuming no on messed with the wire order or timing chain) this is not exact but will allow the engine to start running so you can fine tune the timing to 12-15 degrees. if your timimg is off, the ecu won't send a signal to your injectors. if your ecu is bad, it'll cost you 150+ for rebuilt at discount auto but thoses ecu's are sturdy. check your pick up coil in the distributer. after this, it should start up and also change the oil if it's low or too thin the oil pressure sending unit will read low pressure and your truck will start and then shut off 10 - 40 to 20 50 is good for high miles and will give a good oil pressure reading. also, on mine, the inside of the cat conv was gon and blown into the muffler which caused to high back pressure. if that's the case repalce it imm. summary:
get a throttle body rebuilt kit
replace the fuel pressure regulator
check timing
pick up coil
put in new wires, cap rotor and plugs
and most important replace the o2 sensor if you
put in a new cat with muffler. good luck

i have an 87 dakota 3.9 v-6 that was given to me not running. after some checking we determined it had jumped timing. i replaced the timing set and was told that the engine timed with the cam shaft gear dot facing 6 oclock, and the crank shaft gear dot facing 12 oclock. i timed the engine this way and noticed the rotor button was facing approx 10 oclock. i had to replace the pick up coil in the dist due to no fire. i have made several attempts to start this vehicle with no success. it does not even attempt to try and start. i have wired the dist according to the correct wiring diagram with still no success. i have checked and double checked my repairs but still will not run. any suggestions?
