Guy's: Bought a Dakota 4X4 CC brand new back in 2002. Right from the start I found the engine would burn 2 Qts of oil between changes every 3K miles. In addition, the oil would turn completely black by 1K miles. We'll at 56,000 miles my oil is dark amber at 2200 miles and its only burned a half quart. I'm not complaining, just pleasantly surprised that the motor is getting better, if thats possible? Now I have changed to synthetic in the last 16,000 miles but not sure what that could have done since I assumed my rings never set properly. Was also surprised my mpg went from 16.5 last year to 18.3 now. Synthetic motor oil and possibly the halo's I put in last year had something to do with that. At any rate, the truck's a mystery but running well. I hope it last the 177K mileage of my first DAK. Love this sight. I've gotten many got tips from you all and have saved myself a fair amount of money from those tips. Thx>>AJ

Smokin DAK: Yes I just went thru inspection and passed without a problem. However, here in NJ they hook a computer to the OBD II connector under the dash to check if there are any fault codes stored. If OBD II equipped they don't do an emissions test.

did you put card board down.to see if it leaks...you cant use that much oil with out a leak..i had a crack in the valve cover i had to weld it and goop the gaskets..also plugs and syn oil are going to fix a problem like that..nothing else i can say....dont us after market oil fixers or any gas treatments...you can make your motor worse

Smokin DAK: Sure did check if there were any engine leaks. Used card board under the truck and constantly visually checked around the engine looking for dirty oily areas. Could never find any. I was extremely upset with this engine when I purchased the truck. I had an 89 DAK V6 that lasted to 177K miles before I sold it in good condition. Since my 02 ran fine and no signs of a leak Dodge wouldnt do anything for me. I'm at the point where I'm hoping the truck gives me decent longevity. I'm not complaining in my original post. Just amazed that the motor seems to be retaining oil better now than when new. Like I said, a friggin mystery.

running cold and short trips never getting the
engine upto operating temp is very bad for any
motor

sludge and carbon buildup to the max doing this
if this is the case leave earlyer for work and
take a longer route at least 5 to 6 miles is
needed to warm these motors the cooling systems
are very effecieant, my truck will not throw
heat on cold days untill I drive like 3 miles
at 5 its nice but I do have a dual core V8 rad
in my 4x4

The V6's have chrome moly rings and they do need
some good engine loads to seat properly and fast
if the motor was babied all the time it could very
well use oil until the rings seat

In my 95's owners manual it states during breakin
to do full throttle excelleration but do not
break the speed laws LOL

The new hemi trucks also tell you to do this it
puts a good load on the motor and helps seat the
rings

But I never sean one use that much oil I have seen
some use upto a Qt at 3,000 during breakin

Once the rings are seated if the oil is changed
reg and the a/f ratio is ok replacing o2's when
they go bad they will run virtualy forever I have
customers with over 500,000 miles on there trucks
and they still use no oil and run great but they
are well maintained and when they have a prob
it is taken care of right away they are also
running all sythetic fluids including power
stearing fluid is amsoil universal syn

1 guy runs the milwaukee journal he drives 52
miles to pick them up every morn and another 100
or so to deliver the papers this guy puts about
200 miles a day on his truck 7 days a week with
the topper all syns over 500,000 miles burns
no oil and gets 22mpg every day

We change his oil and filter once a month at
around 8,000 miles and he has over 200,000 miles
on his halo spark plugs I keep telling him he
should change them we pulled one out and they
still look good

He has the headers a cold air a 46mm fastman a
jet stage 2 chip and the crank sensor mod said
he never had a truck last this long in his life
has been doing this for 15 years now LOL he said
the little chevy trucks got crap mileage and were
wore out at 200,000 miles

I think this will be a 1 million mile dodge dakota
its just amazing what good maintainance and syn
oils will do
