Subject: 98 Dakota motor troubles IP: Logged
Message: Hello all,
not too much into auto michanics but I'd like to give this a shot and hopefully save some money...
I have a 98 dodge dakota sport 3.9 V6
I had someone tow my truck about 100 miles as I was moveing to a new state... unfortunatly they wernt as experienced as I thought and never disconnected the drive shaft and just towed it with a dolly
transmision was destroyed... Fortunatly insurance covered the transmision and I had a dealer put a rebuilt tranny in it.
When I got it back from the dealership it had a really loud knock in the engine... it had never had a knock in the engine prior to bringing it to the shop for the transmision repair...
I called the dealership... basicly they said it wasn't their problem it was like that when they got it(not true)
2 days later after leaveing work... the engine just stopped in the middle of the highway and wouldn't even try to turn over...
I checked the voltage on the battery.. Fine.. started.. fine... tryed turning the engine manually with a wrench with no luck wouldnt budge...
By now I relize that the motor is blown my question is how hard is and would it be possible to rebuild the engine at all.. I have a good idea witch cylinder was the problem before (knocking) and have a theory that it may be a broken rod..
Any help is much appriciated..
Rob

Message: wow, talk about trouble, it would probably be easier to go to a salvage yard and get another engine than rebuild what you have. If you want to try to rebuild what you have it may be possible. It depends if the crank was hurt very bad or not, if so it would have to be replaced, but most likely would have to be reground before you could use it again. If you want to keep the truck for a long time, you might check with Auto-Zone, or some other parts store to see if you can get a rebuilt engine.
Good Luck

Message: Was this an automatic
Or a manual left in gear when towed that could
trow a rod
That sounds to conicidental to me one of there
techs probably tested the trans and blew it up
but there is no way to prove that
Any 92 to 03 V6 will fit if its a 92 to 95 you
will need to change the intake and throttle body
from your truck
A good low mile V6 can be had for around $600
A reman V6 they start around $1200

Message: Truck was towed with a uhaul dolly and left in nuteural with drive weels on the pavment...
aparently he asked the dealer and he said it would be fine in neutuaral ... (worked well didnt it)
motor was fine... I periodicly started it and ran the motor after the tranny blew while I was waiting for insurance to tow it to the shop and the motor ran fine...
but as soon as it came back from the shop it was knocking like you wouldnt believe... and then two days later is blew... I have seriously thought into what someone could have done to it to destroy the motor...
I have taken serious care of this truck (like my baby) oil on time always under the hood makeing sure everything was good ... as soon as I picked it up they even said in the shop that I better get the motor checked out... I asked why and explained it ran fine before I took it to them but again no way to prove they screwed it up....
and to add to it I put 4 quorts of oil in it after I got it back from the shop...
and yes it is an automatic ...
amazing how one bad decision to trust one idiot could lead to all this...
the plan for the truck is to get a motor and get it running again and do some conmetic work, and use it for my business... (after all it has a new tranny why junk it... insurance already invested money for me its worth makeing it run again...
thanks for all the help guys
