Subject: MSD SETUP Question IP: Logged
Message: Alright back in February I had to replace two of my PCM's because of a voltage spike from the MSD setup. This question is geared toward larry but if anyone else would care to reply that is fine.
Larry, when setting this up into other peoples trucks, did you put in the diode that was included with the MSD 6A?
If so did you put this on the gray and black trigger wire from the PCM?
I am curious because I would like to put the MSD system back on but kind of scared to.

Message: Big red Batt positive
big black ground
right to batt
orange and black coil wires
I don't hve my wire diagram handy but I think
white is on off and the signal wire
All you do is use the 2 exsisting coil wires
to turn on and trigger the box I will go look
on my truck quick
With a voltmeter exsisting coil wirers
1 stady volts when cranking on/off
1 volts up and down signal
White and red small
1 signal
1 on/off
The Big red should be right to the batt and the
big black ground to engine on one of the coil
mount bolts
The unit will not draw any juice untill its
turned on by the on/off wire
If this is a 96up obd2 truck you will also need
to use the tach adapter or it will trow coil
circuit trouble codes
Thats it use 2 exsisting coil wires and no others
to signal and turn on/off
If you tried to use the dist pickup or crank
sensor wires yes you would fry something the
dist pickup tells the injectors when to fire
has nothing to do with spark or timing
I will say it again the 2 exsisting wires that
go to the coil are your on'off and signal
check which is which with volt meter while
cranking
than the black and orange go to the coil
What your doing is intercepting the coil signal
to run the box

Message: Larry i went ahead and got the wiring harness from MSD to do this correctly the first time. I understand what you are saying. did not use the dist pick up or a crank sensor. I used the two existing wires from the coil and spliced everything correctly.
The truck is a 2003 dakota. I never had a problem with it throwing the code without the tach adapter unless another code was thrown.
My question was on the diode tho? cause i have no idea how this caused the coil driver in the pcm to fry. The coil went bad and i guess there was a voltage spike and it caused the coil driver to fry. any ideas?
I would just like an answer so next time i put it on i know what to look for or how to avoid it. The guys at the dodge dealership just say its because its a hotter coil and thats what caused the PCM to fry. However i was running that system in my truck for almost 2 years with no problems before it fryed.
The old manager at MSD (this guy is no longer with MSD tho) said it was because there were two different coil drivers used in the dodges PCM. I of course now have the newest PCM because i fried to different PCMS and had everything put to stock.
He said that the newer coil driver needed to have a diode on it running to the coil otherwise the coil driver would fry the second the engine was started.
However to me this didnt make sense to me on my first PCM because i was running it for almost 2 years fine!
So i was just wondering on the 96+ dakotas if you input the diode in line to prevent this issue or know anything deeper. Plus we know you know more about dakotas then MSD.
Thanks for your help so far!

Message: Be sure to test it after install. You need to spray water on the ground then stand in the water. With the engine running pull the coil wire off.

Message: I have never used a dioad on any dodge truck
when using the MSD
Some body is pulling your leg
Either the coil shorted out or a wire hit ground
to fry the computer
Some obd2 trucks will run without the tach adpt
some will trow the code
In all the MSD systems I have installed I have
never lost a computer coil or a box
And that includes many othe makes and modles
not just the dodge trucks, I have instaled 100's
of the MSD systems
With 1 exception I took mine threw a carwash 1
day and my elect fan came on and soaked the coil
and it failed about 6 months later
That is the only MSD componaint that I have ever
had fail

Message: Really? hmmm i actually remember i took my truck to the carwash and i was cleaning all up into the engine bay and when i hopped back into the truck i went to start it and it was the first time it didnt start right away. I waited a few mins and then it started. At the time i didnt think anything of it because i was like well it must of gotten wet and now it must fine.
Do you think this caused the coil to short out and then cause the coil driver in the PCM go out?

Message: Yes it certainly could have blown the driver
If you send a full 12 volt to the driver its gone
instantly and your going nowhere fast
I have tried all the boxs out there but I recomend
the MSD above all the rest
The crane fire box, is another indestructible
unit

Message: The coil and the injectors are run by what is
called a driver
In reality all it does is turn the ground side
on/off at time intervals and duration
The coil driver if you would hook up a old dwell
meter like was used on the old point systems you
would see it also varys the dwell time to charge
the coil more or less changing with engine load
something a point system could not do what this
does is make the system more effecient and it does
work very well
A/F ratio these computers will check this like
30 to 60 times per second its just unreal how fast
electronics are
They are 100 times better than the old way but
also 100 times harder to track down some of the
problems they can have that can not be seen on
a scanner but most can be seen on an occiliscope
but there again not all can be found with that
either
Ya I cant beleave Bob Lincoln let that joke out
now heres a guy who actualy got himself a small
occiliscope to work on these new vehicles he
is the 1% of the techs who knows what is going on
the other 99% are lost if the scanner says nothing
wrong they give the vehicle back and make up
excuses, telling the poor guy thats its normal to
run that way
Its also imposible to find the actual wave forms
these sensors put out the only way is to look at
them on a vehicle that runs right and it takes
time to reconise and learn what is right and whats
not
As I am sure Bob is finding out with his new tool
he has but I sure give him credit for getting an
occiliscope and taking the time most would never
do that
